Venue and prize fund
Archerfield Links Golf Club, North Berwick, Scotland • Purse: €1,000,000

The Aberdeen Asset Management Paul Lawrie Match Play is one of the youngest tournaments on the European Tour. Started in 2015 and hosted by the 1999 Open Champion Paul Lawrie the tournament is played in a 64-man single-elimination match play format.

This year’s tournament will be held from 4th – 7th August and is the second edition of the tournament. The prize money on offer is €1million and commands interest with its exciting knock-out format.

This year’s tournament will see action at the Archerfield Links in East Lothian – last year’s action was at the Murcar Links Golf Club. The magnificent locale situated between Muirfield and North Berwick offers a picturesque destination of Scotland’s Golf Coast.

It is believed that golf has been played over this land for more than five centuries. The Paul Lawrie Match Play will be played on the Fidra Links which lies between the 8th hole at Muirfield and the 9th hole at North Berwick.

The course measures around 7, 000 yards though it presents a unique challenge to the players – as there are four sets of tees at every hole to cater to varying abilities. The Greens at Fidra are large and receptive with subtle borrows that test even the best of putters. There is scope for traditional play as well with the run-up areas in front enabling the bump-and-run shots along the ground. Early holes are defined by the pine trees that give them company while the links aspect of the course come into play from the 12th hole onward.

The 64-man knockout event is one of the extremely popular sporting events on Scotland’s Golf Coast. It is one of the nine major professional golfing events taking place across multiple tours in Scotland in 2016. This year tournament will have a clutch of Ryder Cup contenders and Masters winners lined up. Chris Wood (2016 BMW PGA Championship Winner) and Matthew Fitzpatrick (2016 Nordea Masters Winner) heads the line-up.

Also in the fray are Thomas Bjorn and Stephen Gallacher who along with the 2010 Ryder Cup player Eduardo Molinari provide an exciting match play contest to look forward to.
Gallacher hasn’t played since a hand injury flared up again at the Nordea Masters in early June. The line-up has six former Ryder Cup players, one major winner and more than 40 European Tour winners.

Alex Noran, David Howell, Robert Rock and Pablo Larrazabal are just some of the other well-known names gracing the occasion. Leading the local charge will be Gallacher along with Paul Lawrie, Marc Warren, Richie Ramsay, Craig Lee and Scott Jamieson.

Last year’s action saw Thailand’s Kiradech Aphibarnrat hold his nerve and beat Robert Karlsson by one hole in the final. The Thai had ended the local hopes by seeing off Marc Warren in the semi-final. This year the local hopefuls will look for a better performance. Watch out for the experience Gallacher who will come with a new swing and could be an outsider to claim a victory.

Golf Tips For The AAM Paul Lawrie Match Play

We are only putting two tips up for the match play this week, as with a limited field it would not be viable to select three. The three at the top of the betting Noren, Fitzpatrick and Chris Wood are worthy favourites but none feature as our tips. Instead we go for a local in Marc Warren who has some decent form in this event when going down in the semi’s last year to eventual winner Aphibarnrat. He is a decent shout at 40/1 with Betfred to go a couple better.

Matthew Southgate has put in some fine performances this season which culminated in a T12 finish in The Open. His style of attacking play will be well suited by the match play format and we see him going deep in to the competition and with 4 places on offer he only has to make the semi’s to pick up money for us. He is a best priced 33/1 with William Hill’s to do so. One other to keep an eye on is England’s Richard Bland who is having a wonderfully consistent season making 16 out of 18 cuts this year. He is also high up on the tours stroke average charts and considering how many events he has played is no mean feat. He is a best priced 35/1 at
