Albania v Switzerland Euro 2016 Group A Preview

Underdogs Albania face Switzerland on Saturday in Group A of Euro 2016 in Lens, as both teams look to start their campaign with a victory.

Albania were one of the surprise qualifiers for Euro 2016 and are odds of 5/1 with Ladbrokes to shock their first opponents at the finals, but they will have a major task on their hands to beat a strong Swiss side.

Albania will be at their first ever competitive international tournament after finishing above the likes of Serbia and Denmark in qualifying. Italian boss Gianni De Biasi has done a fantastic job creating an effective solid outfit, who attempt to press their opponent’s high-up the pitch.

De Biasi’s side finished second in Group I behind Portugal, scoring just ten goals, but also conceded just five goals to qualify for the finals of Euro 2016. They will need to maintain that solid defensive record to have any hope of making it out of the group stages.

Switzerland are favourites to win this clash at odds of 5/6 with Coral after finishing second in Group E behind England in qualifying.

The Swiss have a highly-rated group of players, with a decent mix of young and old players. Vladimir Petkovic’s side were the third highest scorers in qualification with 24 goals and will look to continue their prolific form in front of goal.

Past Meetings

These two teams have met on six occasions in international football, with Switzerland recording five wins and the other game finishing in a draw. Albania have never beaten Switzerland in competitive action.

These two teams last met in qualifying for the 2014 World Cup, with the Swiss prevailing 2-0 at home and 2-1 away in Tirana. The only game that the Albanian’s have avoid defeat in was in qualifying for Euro 2004 when they recorded a 1-1 draw.

Team and Selection News

Albania are likely to play with a lone striker in Sokol Cikalleshi, as the rest of the team stay compact just like qualifying. One vaguely familiar face to English fans will be that of former-Sunderland midfielder Lorik Cana, who now anchors the Albanian defence.

Switzerland have a number of highly-rated players in their team heading into this tournament. Stoke City playmaker Xherdan Shaqiri will be looking to add to the four goals he scored in qualifying, while Arsenal’s new defensive midfielder Granit Xhaka is likely to be anchoring the Swiss midfield.

The Gunners new signing could start against his brother Taulent Xhaka, who pledged his international future to Albania prior to the Euro 2016 qualifiers.

Possible Albania team line-up: Berisha, Veseli, Cana, Angolli, Hysaj, T. Xhaka, Kukeli, Lenjani, Gashi, Roshi, Cikalleshi

Possible Switzerland team line-up: Sommer, Lichtsteiner, Djourou, Schar, Rodriguez, G. Xhaka, Behrami, Mehmedi, Dzemaili, Shaqiri, Seferovic.

Betting Tips

Just like the opening game in this group this is unlikely to be a goal fest. Albania are solid in defence and often lack a goal threat, but Switzerland should have enough quality to see the Albanians off in a low-scoring game.
