Arsenal host Southampton at the Emirates Stadium on Tuesday night in the Premier League, as the home side look to return to the top of the table.
FA Cup holders Arsenal made it through to the fourth round of the competition with a 2-1 win over Championship Burnley on Saturday. The win ended a three game run without a win for the north London side.
Last time out in the Premier League, the Gunners suffered a 1-0 home defeat against Chelsea, with Diego Costa scoring the only goal, after Per Mertesacker was shown a red card early in the clash.
The defeat leaves the Gunners third in the Premier League table, three points behind surprise league leaders Leicester City and behind second-place Manchester City on goal difference.
Southampton won 1-0 at Manchester United last time out, with substitute Charlie Austin scoring the only goal of the game on his debut. The Saints season has been turned around in recent weeks and Ronald Koeman’s side are now eyeing up a European spot.
The Saints are now eighth place in the Premier League table, four points behind Manchester United in fifth spot, but are in now in good form.

Team Selection & News

Arsenal’s injury list has shortened significantly in the last few weeks. Midfielders Santi Cazorla and Jack Wilshere, along with forward Danny Welbeck are the only likely absentees through injury. Mertesacker will be available again after serving a suspension against Burnley.
Southampton are still without Romanian centre-back and striker Jay Rodriguez through injury, while Steven Davis and Graziano Pelle are both doubts. Austin may make his full debut up front for the Saints.

Arsenal v Southampton Match Prediction

The two team’s top-flight form is contrasting, but a key to this clash could be the return to fitness of Arsenal forward Alexis Sanchez, as the Chilean scored the winning goal against Burnley and gained some valuable playing time.
For me the Gunners may just edge this game in a narrow victory, but it is unlikely to be easy for the side from north London.
