Rock-bottom Aston Villa host reigning champions Chelsea at Villa Park on Saturday in the Premier League’s early kick-off.

Aston Villa’s season has just lurched from defeat to the next and last time the Villans suffered a 1-0 defeat at Swansea, with Federico Fernandez grabbing the only goal of the game.

The side from the Midlands were routed to the bottom of the table prior to the defeat in south Wales, but the Villans are now 12 points from safety with just seven games remaining this season. The team’s woeful run of form has led to speculation that boss Remi Garde may well leave the club in the near future.

Chelsea’s season is effectively over, as they currently sit tenth in the Premier League table after a 2-2 draw at home to London rivals West Ham. Manuel Lanzini opened the scoring for the Hammers, before Cesc Fabregas equalised in first half stoppage-time.

West Ham regained the lead trough Andy Carroll, only for Fabregas to equalise with a controversial penalty kick with just a minute left on the clock. The draw leaves the reigning champions 10 points behind fourth-place Manchester City and seemingly with an impossible task to make the Champions League spots for next season.

The Blues have also narrowly had the better of 23 Premier League meetings at Villa Park, recording nine wins. Villa have recorded seven wins, while seven games have resulted in draws.

Chelsea have won seven out of the last eight fixtures between these two teams in all competitions.

Chelsea are unbeaten in 14 Premier League games, but have drawn their last two top-flight games which were both at Stamford Bridge.

Team Selection And News

Villa’s only definite absentee through injury is French full-back Jordan Amavi, who is out of action for the remainder of the season. Jack Grealish, Adama Traore and Libor Kozak all have a chance of returning to action after injury problems. Centre-back Micah Richards is also a slight doubt, but is expected to recover in time to feature.

Chelsea’s French centre-back Kurt Zouma has been ruled out for the rest of the season, while Eden Hazard, Kenedy and Radamel Falcao are all doubts. Spanish international striker Diego Costa is suspended. Bertrand Traore may get a start up front.

Possible Aston Villa Team Selection

Guzan, Hutton, Lescott, Okore, Bacuna, Gueye, Westwood, Gil, Veretout, Ayew, Gestede

Possible Chelsea Team Selection

Courtois, Ivanovic, Terry, Cahill, Azpilicueta, Mikel, Fabregas, Willian, Oscar, Pedro, Traore

Match Prediction

There is no sign of Villa’s poor form abating and even though Chelsea have not been that convincing in recent months, I do expect Guus Hiddink’s side to record a relatively comfortable victory over the rock-bottom Villans.
