Already-relegated Aston Villa play hosts to Southampton at Villa Park on Saturday in the Premier League, as the visitors look to continue their challenge for a top six spot.

Aston Villa’s relegation from the Premier League was confirmed last weekend with a 1-0 defeat at Manchester United with youngster Marcus Rashford grabbing the only goal of the game.

Relegation was just a matter of time and it was inevitable in the end. Villa are current manager-less and 15 points behind 17th place Norwich. The recriminations have already started, with some of the senior players getting the brunt of the blame for Villa’s atrocious form this season.

Last time out Southampton drew 1-1 at Everton in the Premier League. The Toffees took the lead through Ramiro Funes Mori, before Senegalese winger Sadio Mane equalised for the Saints.

In truth the side from the south coast will be disappointed not to have beaten an understrength Toffees side. However, Ronald Koeman’s side are still well-placed to still challenge for a top-six spot this season.

Facts And Figures

The 33 Premier League meetings between these two teams have been relatively even, as Aston Villa have recorded 13 wins, while Southampton have claimed 11 wins and there has also been nine draws.

The 16 Premier League meetings at Villa Park have also been a similar story, as Villa have recorded six wins, Southampton have won four times and six games have finished in draws.

Villa have not won any of the last five meetings in all competitions and have won just one of the last eight games between the two teams.

Villa have lost their last nine games in the Premier League and have also failed to score in five out of their last six outings in the top-flight. The Villans have lost their last five Premier League games at Villa Park.

There have been under 2.5 goals scored in seven of Southampton’s last away games in the Premier League.

Team Selection And News

Aston Villa are without youngster Jordan Amavi, who looks unlikely to play again this season through injury, while experienced striker Gabriel Agbonlahor has been suspended by the club for disciplinary reasons and will not be considered for selection.

Spanish playmaker Carles Gil and defender Micah Richards could both be recalled to the starting line-up after starting on the bench last time out.

Southampton have no definite absentees. However, centre-backs Jose Fonte and Florin Gardos are doubts along with central midfielder Victor Wanyama and striker Charlie Austin. Steven Davis could come into the starting line-up if Wanyama fails to start and Maya Yoshida could come at centre-back for Fonte.

Possible Aston Villa Team Selection

Guzan, Hutton, Richards, Clark, Bacuna, Westwood, Gueye, Sinclair, Gil, Ayew, Gestede

Possible Southampton Team Selection

Forster, Martina, Yoshida, Van Dijk, Bertrand, Clasie, Davis, Tadic, Long, Mane, Pelle

Match Prediction

Aston Villa have been poor for much of the campaign and their form shows no sign of improving, so it may be predictable but I am predicting an away win.
