Atletico Madrid v Bayern Champions League semi-final preview

Atletico Madrid v Bayern Munich Champions League semi-final Preview
Fresh from eliminating European champions Barcelona in the quarter-finals, Atletico Madrid now host another European giant Bayern Munich at the Vicente Calderon in the Champions League semi-final first leg.

Atletico recorded a memorable 3-2 aggregate victory over compatriots and reigning European champions Barcelona last time out. Diego Simeone’s side suffered a 2-1 defeat at the Nou Camp, but recorded a memorable 2-0 win in the second leg at the Calderon courtesy of a double from Antoine Griezmann.

Atletico are in the semi-finals of this competition for the second time in three seasons and will be confident of making the final once again following their victory over Barcelona.

Bayern Munich also made it through to the last four with a 3-2 aggregate victory, by beating Portuguese side Benfica. The Bavarians won 1-0 at the Allianz Arena in the first leg and the return leg finished 2-2 at the Estadio Da Luz.
Pep Guardiola’s side will need to improve on a poor away record in this competition to progress, as Bayern have won just two of their last nine games on their travels in this competition.

Facts And Figures

These two teams have only ever met twice in this competition, both meeting coming in 1974 in the European Cup final.

The first game finished 1-1 after extra-time, but Bayern won the replay 4-0 with braces from Uli Hoeness and Gerd Muller. That replay was the only ever seen in the European Cup final and was the first of three consecutive triumphs in the competition for the Bavarians.

Atletico have enjoyed mixed fortunes in their four European cup semi-finals, winning two and losing two. However, they are unbeaten at the Calderon in the competition at this stage, recording three wins and a draw.

Los Rojiblancos have a good home record against German teams in European competition, having gone five games unbeaten, winning four and drawing one of those games.

Bayern are unbeaten in seven games in the Champions League and have scored two or more in six of their last seven Champions League games.

Atletico Madrid have kept clean sheets in six of their last eight games in the Champions League and have conceded fewer goals than any team in the top European leagues.

Team Selection And News

Atletico Madrid have a few problems at the back with centre-backs Diego Godin and Jose Maria Gimenez both major doubts. Central midfielder Tiago also looks set to miss out through injury.

Bayern have also got a few injury worries heading into this clash. Centre-back Holger Badstuber and winger Arjen Robben both look set to miss out through injury, while versatile defender Jerome Boateng is a doubt

Possible Atletico Madrid Team Selection

Oblak, Juanfran, Savic, Hernandez, Luis, Koke, Saul, Gabi, Carrasco, Griezmann, Torres

Possible Bayern Munich Team Selection

Neuer, Lahm, Kimmich, Benatia, Alaba, Vidal, Costa, Muller, Thiago, Ribery, Lewandowski

Match Prediction

Atletico Madrid are strong and resilient, especially at home and Bayern have been poor on their travels in this competition of late. I can see Diego Simeone’s side recording a narrow win in this clash.
