Austria v Hungary Euro 2016 Group F Preview

Neighbours Austria and Hungary go head-to-head on Tuesday in Group F of Euro 2016, as both teams look for a crucial opening game victory.

Austria were one of the outstanding teams in qualifying and are odds of 3/4 with Ladbrokes to kick-off their campaign with a victory.

Austria topped their qualification group ahead of Russia and Sweden, recording an impressive nine wins and one draw. Only England, who won all their games garnered more points in qualifying, which was highly impressive considering they had never qualified for a European Championship.

Their only appearance at European Championships came when they co-hosted the tournament back in 2008. They must be considered dangerous opponents for any team in this tournament. Veteran striker Marko Janko was in fine form in qualifying, scoring seven times in nine appearances.

Hungary were one of the more surprising qualifiers for Euro 2016 and they are odds of 5/1 with Coral Bookmakers to surprise their neighbours.

Hungary finished third in their qualifying group behind Northern Ireland and Romania, but qualified for the finals by recording a play-off victory over Norway. This will be their first appearance at a major international tournament since the World Cup in 1986.

Bernd Storck’s team are very much underdogs heading into this tournament. They qualified after conceding nine goals and scoring 11 goals, the lowest tally of any team in France.

Past Meetings

Austria and Hungary have faced each other on an incredible 137 occasions, making it the second most played international fixture. Hungary have recorded 66 wins, compared to Austria’s 40 victories and 31 games have resulted in draws.

The first and only meeting at major finals between these two teams came in the 1934 World Cup, as Austria defeated Hungary 2-1 to make it to the semi-finals. However Hungary triumphed last time these two teams met in competitive action, which was in qualification for the 1986 World Cup.

The Hungarians won 3-1 in the home fixture and prevailed 3-0 in the reverse fixture in Vienna. The two teams last met in 2006 in Sturm in a friendly match, which saw Austria record a 2-1 victory.

Team and Selection News

Austria have a number of players plying their trade in the Premier League including defensive trio Christian Fuchs, Kevin Wimmer and Sebastien Prodl and Stoke’s star winger Marko Arnautovic.

Fuchs and Arnautovic are the only guaranteed starters for Marcel Koller’s team from the quartet. Also in their starting line-up will be Bayern Munich star David Alaba and Stuttgart’s Martin Harnik.

Hungary are still heavily reliant on veterans like Gabor Kiraly and Voltan Gera, who both have extensive experience in European football including long spells in English football. However their star player is arguably Bursaspor attacking midfielder Balazs Dzsudzsak.

Possible Austria team line-up: Almer, Klein, Dragovic, Hinteregger, Fuchs, Baumgartlinger, Alaba, Harnik, Junuzovic, Arnautovic, Janko

Possible Hungary team line-up: Kiraly, Fiola, Lang, Guzmics, Kadar, Elek, Nagy, Dzsudzsak, Gera, Nemeth, Priskin

Betting Tip
In truth Hungary have done very well to make it through to the finals and are major underdogs in this group. Austria are looking very strong and are considered by many as dark horses for the competition.

I expect the Austrians to beat their neighbours relatively comfortably and get their campaign of to a winning start.
