Belgium v Italy Euro 2016 Group A Preview

The two favourites to progress from Euro 2016’s Group E Belgium and Italy meet on Monday night at the Stade de Lyon.

Belgium are regarded as one of the highest rated teams in the finals are 17/11 favourites at Unibet bookmaker to come out on top in this clash.

Belgium topped their group ahead of Wales and Bosnia and Herzegovina. The highly-rated Red Devils suffered just one defeat and conceded just five goals. They also scored a group high of 25 goals in the process of qualifying.

Marc Wilmots team has a number of highly-rated players in his squad and two Premier League players Kevin De Bruyne and Eden Hazard caught the eye in qualifying, both scoring five times.

Italy were not exactly convincing in qualifying and are underdogs for victory against Belgium at odds of 21/10 with Ladbrokes.

The Azzurri topped their qualification group ahead of Croatia and Norway, winning seven games and drawing three. The unbeaten record did little to provide the country’s fans with much optimism, as the current team is considered to be one of the weakest in recent history.

Italy’s goal tally of just 16 goals was actually beaten by four teams who failed to qualify, and in what was seen as a weak group the Azzurri struggled against the likes of Malta and Azerbaijan. Boss Antonio Conte’s imminent move to Chelsea and injury problems has also not helped the mood in the camp.

Past Meetings

These two nations have met on five occasions in competitive action, with Belgium winning once, Italy recording two wins and two games finishing in draws. Belgium’s only competitive win against the Azzurri came in the quarter-finals of this competition back in 1972.

A goalless draw in Milan was then followed-up by a 2-1 victory for the Belgians in Brussels. The two nations produced a goalless draw at Euro ’80. The two sides then met once again in the 2000 edition, as the Azzurri won 2-0 in the group stage.

In strange twist, both Italy boss Antonio Conte and Belgian counterpart Marc Wilmots played in the 2000 clash.

Team and Selection News

Belgium were handed a huge blow in the run-up to the tournament with captain Vincent Kompany ruled out through injury. Manchester City club-mate Jason Denayer could replace him at the heart of the defence, while Eden Hazard will take the captains armband.

Italy have been plagued by injuries ahead of the finals. Influential midfielders Claudio Marchisio and Marco Verratti will both miss out through injury, while the likes of Andrea Pirlo, Mario Balotelli and Sebastian Giovinco have also been omitted from the squad by Conte.

Possible Belgium team line-up: Mignolet, Alderweireld, Denayer, Vermaelen, Vertonghen, Witsel, Nainggolan, Fellaini, De Bruyne, Hazard, Lukaku

Possible Italy team line-up: Buffon, Barzagli, Chiellini, Bonucci, Candreva, Florenzi, De Rossi, Motta, Darmian, Eder, Pelle

Betting Tip
Italy are a tournament team and will be dangerous opponents for the highly-rated Belgians in this clash. The Azzurri have a habit of producing their best results in unlikely circumstances. However, I can see Marc Wilmots side sneaking a narrow victory in this clash against Italy.
