Cheltenham Festival Day Three Betting Tips & Preview

Cheltenham Festival Day Three Betting Tips & Preview

by 16th March 2016

Day three at the Cheltenham Festival betting preview and tips from our racing tipster @Theonlytipster. A bit of a frustrating day yesterday with some selected dangers winning the races as opposed to our main selections, but never mind, today is another day and I fancy we are going to have a good one!

Cheltenham Festival Thursday Review And Betting Selections

13.30 JLT Novice Chase

I do not think this is a vintage renewal and I think there are only really 3 horses to consider. The selection is Bristol De Mai for the very in form Twiston Davies team. BDM has done little wrong over fences so far and has very been impressive in his wins, the only concern is good ground, but BDM has won on Good to Soft so I do not think it will inconvenience too much.

The dangers are coming from the, unsurprisingly, Mullins stable in the shape of Black Hercules and Outlander.

BH fell at the final fence last time out so has to bounce back. This is a drop in trip for BH so the question is, did he fall because he was getting tired or will the potentially quicker pace dropped in trip put his jumping under pressure? Either way, 9/2 is too short for me to find out.

Outlander is also 9/2 but has had a solid season, the real concern here is the ground and unlike BDM, I do really believe O will struggle on the quicker ground.

Garde Le Victoire is joint favourite at the moment and does have a victory over BDM this season, however, the Hobbs horses have not fired so far this week and I am very confident BDM will comfortably reverse the form.

14.10 Pertemps Final

Not been seen since November, to protect the handicap mark, Missed Approach has been targeted at this race and although the Greatrex stable have not been quite hitting their straps yet this week, I truly believe this will get their Cheltenham rolling – just in time for Cole Harden?

With a field of 24 runners there are many dangers lurking, chief amongst are Our Kaempfer, top weight Taglietelle and Leave at Dawn for that man Charles Byrnes – if there is money for this take note! And it is the choice of Barry Geraghty.

14.50 Ryanair Chase

Well what do we make of this field with Vautour turning up? In reality this was the race for V as he patently would not stay the Gold Cup distance and the reality is if V gets round and runs to form he should outclass this field.

Should V not turn up then Village Vic is the alternative with his Cheltenham form the sway.

15.30 World Hurdle

What a race ………… the big question is – will Thistlecrack prove as effective on drying ground? I am not convinced. Highly impressive this season good or faster ground might cause him a few issues.

So, what are the alternatives?

Alphas Des Obeaux for Mouse Morris must not be under estimated as he has oodles of grade one form and the trainer is a master at getting a horse ready for when it counts!

Cole Harden the defending champion has the ground turning in his direction. Against this is the lack of a run since January 1st. The Greatrex stable continue in decent form and they are bullish, so, you cannot rule him out.

Martello Tower is the selection, won at the festival last year and although not been at his best so far this season, the deep ground would not have played to his strengths and 25/1 is an insult.

Whisper for the Henderson team is the dark horse in this and the stable vibes have been very positive. His form at home has to be taken on trust but he would not be the first Henderson horse to come back to form when it matters as the run of My Tent Or Yours proved.

Not convinced the Nicholls runners will place in this renewal.

16.10 Plate

Best bet of the day runs here in Johns Spirit. As I predicted in Tuesdays previews the Jonjo stable had to be watched with the ground more Good than Soft and his runners have been very competitive and on this surface JS simply has to be backed.

Stiletto from the Nicholls stable is the main danger.

16.50 Mares Novice Hurdle

The festivals new race and the starting point here is what is Willie Mullins running. The answer is the odds on favourite and selection Limini. Only had 2 runs under rules but she won them both comfortably and with WM’s record in mares races who are we to oppose.

An each way alternative is Chocca Wocca. Although the bare form of her hurdle win leaves her plenty to find, the better ground and the experience will definitely bring about improvement.17.30 Kim Muir Chase

MINEFIELD! Is what this race should be renamed. A review of the main players below:

Cause of Causes – Gordon Elliott runners always need a second look as does the jockey J J Codd. A winner under this Jockey at the festival last year CoC has to be on everyone’s short list.

Midnight Prayer is the selection for the race and like CoC; MP has won at the festival before, in 2014. MP has been on the comeback trail this season and has only had 3 runs which brings him here fresher than most.

Doctor Harper looks like an old fashioned Pipe handicap plot, except the price does not leave much room to get the money down on the day. Better ground should suit and not without a major chance.

The Giant Bolster – a festival Gold Cup staple is down in grade, but he is now 11 and although the better ground is in his favour, can the down grade and Cheltenham give him on more last hurrah?

Capard King for Jonjo back on better ground – enough said. Chance at a decent price.
