Cheltenham Festival Gold Cup Betting Tips & Preview

by 17th March 2016

It’s Gold Cup Day at The Cheltenham Festival and we have saved the best racing tips till last. Three of my maximum Cheltenham bets run today and we have had to wait the whole week for them to come out. The 3 in question are Blue Hell, Don Cossack and Next Sensation and these three are the main selections today.

13.30 Triumph Hurdle
Despite Yanworth coming up slightly short on Wednesday, I do think Alan King holds the key to this race with Sceau Royal and Who Dares Wins. Preference is for WDW as I believe the better ground will suit this former flat horse much better than SR, although SR has done very little wrong this season.

Of the dangers, the current favourite Ivanovich Gorbatov needs to bounce back from a disappointing run last time out, albeit, in very deep ground and a bigger threat could come from Zubayr for the Nicholls stable who, like Wednesdays winner Diego Du Charmil, has come over from France and won on debut for the stable.

Of those at bigger prices, Jers Girl has had an excellent season and this former flat horse could stay on a bit better than recent runs on the better ground.

14.10 County Hurdle
Blue Hell
has to be the selection in this big field handicap. BH beat the easy Coral Cup winner, Diamond King comfortably on his only run so far this season and BH was immediately put away for this race by its excellent trainer Alan Fleming, who’s stable have had a very good year in Ireland.

14.50 Albert Bartlett
This is a cracking contest and a devil of a puzzle to solve. I have narrowed the field down to 3, none of which are particularly surprising.

My selection is Shantou Village who is unbeaten when the ground has been good, but SV will have to battle past the ultra-game and still unbeaten Barters Hill. BH running style will leave him out there to be shot at, but so far no horse has been able to battle past, today could be the day.

The third horse is the Mullins / Walsh combination Long Dog. LD has, like SV, only been beaten the once but SV has been keeping better company. However, we know with WM that his horses can still perform even if the races they have been winning have not been up to much. Before Vroum Vroum Mag won at Sandown people were saying the same things then!

15.30 Gold Cup
I think it is only me, but I cannot see anything but a big win for Don Cossack. It is arguable that DC may have caught Cue Card in the King George had he managed to negotiate the last and therein lies the issue. DC has an engine but can jump stickily, if he has a good day over the fences he will be storming up the hill.

Cue Card has never stayed the Gold Cup distance and although he has had a stellar year and his yard have been in fantastic form I believe CC will be outstayed.

Dom Poli is of obvious interest and you never know what is left in the tank as he only ever manages to do just enough. However, Bryan Cooper has chosen DC and that is enough for me.

16.10 Fox Hunter Chase
Or to give the race its new name – The Victoria Pendleton Chase. For the record, any publicity for racing can only be viewed as a positive and I wonder if VP will try her hand on the flat in the summer.

As for the race itself it is probably best to side with On the Fringe for Bolger / Carberry as they took his last year very comfortably.

16.50 Martin Pipe
A 24 runner conditional jockey’s handicap is never an easy task to decipher.

Of those at the head of the market, Squouateur is a worthy favourite for Gordon Elliott and the excellent Jack Kennedy. While Qualando runs for another formidable partnership in Nicholls and Cobden.

I do not think S is value at around 4/1 and Nicholls has another live chance with Ibis Du Rhea, however, on good ground I think Nabucco at 25/1 is excellent value and Craig Nichol is a very good pilot.

17.30 Grand Annual
And so to the farewell of the 2016 festival and my NAP of the entire meeting, I know, the last race! Next Sensation was placed in 2014 and won in 2015 and once again this has been the target for the Scudamore team.

The biggest danger, on form, is probably Rock the World, but the Harrington runners at the festival have been very disappointing, so have a look at Eastlake (runner up last year) for the Jonjo team, Savello, the winner in 2014 and Velvet Maker from the Fleming stable in Ireland.
