Croatia v Portugal Euro 2016 Last 16 Betting Preview & Tips

Croatia and Portugal clash in the last-16 of Euro 2016 on Saturday in Lens in one of the most intriguing ties the round.

Croatia were one of the more impressive teams in the group stage and are favourites to win this one at odds of 17/10 with William Hill.

Croatia qualified for the knockout stages by recording two wins and a draw. A win against Turkey, a draw against Czech Republic and a confident 2-1 win over Spain in the last group game meant that Ante Cacic’s side topped their group.

Croatia’s performance’s in the three group games sees them head into the last-16 of the competition as one of the dark horses for the competition. Ante Cacic’s side are now undefeated in ten games, winning eight games and drawing two.

Portugal were underwhelming in the group stage and are underdogs at odds of 21/10 with Ladbrokes.

Portugal qualified for the knockout stages of the competition by drawing all three games against Iceland, Austria and Hungary. Cristiano Ronaldo missed a penalty against Austria, but scored twice against Hungary in the last group game.

The former-Manchester United star is likely to be the man that Fernando Santos’ team will once again look to inspire the win. Fenerbahce winger Nani also scored twice as Ronaldo’s strike-partner in the group games and will be looking to add to his goal tally in this clash.

Past Meetings

These two nations have met just three times and Portugal has come out on top in all three games, without conceding a goal.

The first meeting of the two countries’ came back in the group stages of Euro ’96, with Portugal prevailing 3-0, although Croatia had already qualified having won their first games and rest players.

The two teams last met in a friendly game back in June 2013, as Portugal won 1-0 in Geneva with Ronaldo scoring the only goal of the game.

Team and Selection News

Croatia boss Ante Cacic has two major injury concerns in Real Madrid playmaker Luka Modric and Juventus striker Mario Mandzukic, after both missed the win against Spain. Marko Roj and Milan Badelj could be the central midfield partnership without Modric, while former-Blackburn forward Nikola Kalinic is on stand-by to replace Mandzukic.

Portugal still have a doubts over the fitness of left-back Raphael Guerreiro, who has a thigh problem and missed out on the 3-3 draw with Hungary last time out. Eliseu played at left-back in the last game and is likely to continue if Guerreiro fails to recover.

Possible Croatia team line-up:
Subasic, Srna, Corluka, Vida, Strinic, Roj, Badelj, Brozovic, Rakitic, Perisic, Kalinic

Possible Portugal team line-up:
Rui Patricio, Vieirinha, Pepe, R. Carvalho, Eliseu, Mario, Moutinho, Gomes, Quaresma, Nani, Ronaldo

Betting Tip
Despite Portugal’s dominance over Croatia in previous games Croatia head into this clash in better form and mood. Ronaldo may have just hit his stride, but Croatia are a very well-balanced outfit that could cause any teams problems and should just record a narrow win in this clash.
