Venue and prize fund
Albatross Golf Resort, Prague, Czech Republic • Purse: €1,000,000

The D+D Real Czech Masters is a young but popular event on the European golfing calendar. The inaugural tournament was played in 2014 and the third edition of the event will be played at the Albatross Golf Club in Prague from 18th of August 2016. The total prize money on offer for the tournament is €1 million.

The Albatross Course measures 7,467 yards and has a par score of 72. Some of the holes make it tough for the competitors – in particular, the slightly doglegged par-4 Hole on the 18th. The presence of a creek running down the right of the fairway and a lake stretching up to the green on the opposite flank is a mighty proposition for the players.

Thomas Pieters who won the last year trophy and underlined his credentials as one of the exciting youngsters on European golfing scene will return for another shot at glory. Success at the 2015 D+D Real Czech Masters was followed by further triumphs through the year that saw him ending 29th in the Race to Dubai.

The Belgian will be looking to rekindle his romance with the event but the field is strong enough to worry him. Leading the pack of competitors is Jamie Donaldson who is was the inaugural edition winner here. Lee Westwood will make his debut but keep an eye on him as the Englishman will be chasing a Ryder Cup place. He is a 23-time European Tour winner and a Ryder Cup legend – so put your bets on the experienced Brit to be near the top this week and he can backed at odds of 10/1.

Joining Westwood will be fellow Ryder Cup hopefuls Andy Sullivan and Matthew Fitzpatrick – the latter of whom finished in third place in this event last year. Both these players are currently occupying the final two automatic qualification spots for Ryder Cup – keep an eye on their performance this week with the pair odds of 8/1 and 6/1 respectively to come out on top.

Adding colour to the field will be John Daly and Rory Sabbatini – easily two of the most colourful characters in golf. Daly, who has earned fame as a country musician, will be hoping to stay afloat among the younger generation at a ripe old age of 50. South African Sabbatini will also make his debut at this tournament and will be making his first regular European Tour appearance since 2009.

One other name to keep in mind when you think of favourites this year will be that of Andy Sullivan from England. Sullivan is hoping to be in the mix of things for Ryder Cup selection and is relishing a return to the Albatross – he played here in 2014 before going on to have a stunning 2015 campaign and is odds of 7/1 to triumph here.

The tournament has become hugely popular with the stars of the European Tour as is evident from the roster of big names that it attracts. Donaldson who was the first edition winner in Prague went on hit the winning shot for Europe in Ryder Cup that year. With this year’s Ryder Cup places up for grabs, there is huge expectation that the nucleus of Darren Clarke’s team for the upcoming showdown will be picked up from this year tournament.

Golf Tips For The D+D Real Czech Masters
Thomas Pieters is a worthy favourite and with his fine form shown last week at The Olympics can definitely give it a good go at defending his title as. For us though we think the whole experience and travelling from Brazil he will be a bit flat. With that in mind we look at another youngster Matthew Fitzpatrick, he has impressed since being on the scene. He followed up his first win on the European Tour at the British Masters by winning the Nordea Masters earlier this year. He is our choice for likely winner at the Czech Masters at odds of 16/1 with Bet365.

Richard Sterne has been in doldrums for the past couple of years and has fallen to a world ranking of over 300. We have seen signs that his form is on the way back with some high finishes in recent weeks and this is reflected on his shortish odds of 33/1 with Coral. He is a six time winner on the European Tour so winning will not come as a shock to anyone and we feel with the quality of field on offer he can make a big impact.

For our outsider this week we pick the South African Haydn Porteus. A winner in the Joburg Open back in January he has disappointed  in the main this year. He did show some improved form in Paul Lawrie’s match play in Scotland a couple of weeks ago. He is a risky proposition but at the odds of 66/1 with Coral is worth the chance.
