The K Club, Straffan, Co. Kildare, Republic of Ireland • Purse: €4,000,000

The Irish Open is one of the more well-recognized tournaments on the European Tour having been initially been played in 1927. Beginning from 2015, the tournament is hosted by Rory McIlroy with his charitable foundation being the main benefactor and Dubai Duty Free as the title sponsor.

Through its history the Irish open has provided spectacular competition for the world’s top professional golfers as well as the amateurs who are waiting to make their mark. This years tournament will be played at the K Club in Kildare from 19th May.

The Kildare Hotel and Golf Club (abbreviated as ‘The K Club’) measures 7, 350 yards with a par-score of 72. The winning purse has been increased to € 4 million making this one of the highest purses on the 2016 calendar. The course was designed by the legendary Arnold Palmer and you could see his signature styles splashed all over the course. The presence of the River Liffey adds to the intrigue, which makes its way through the course, and becomes hazardous on a number of holes.

The course is designed to challenge the best of the golfers who will enjoy it when on song. Some of the holes are designed to be intimidating, not least the one on the 16th. This par-five hole measures a monstrous 600 yards has all types of hazards littered across its length – trees, waters, punishing rough and bunkers. Even more difficult than this hole is the one on the 7th measuring 430 yards that requires an accurate approach shot to the green guarded by water.

The tournament has seen many illustrious winners grace the finish podium with Steve Ballesteros claiming three titles in the mid-1980s. Recent years has seen more local success with Padraig Harrington leading the Irish success story with a win in 2007. It was left to the amateur Shane Lowry in 2009 to annex the title. No wonder then McIlroy will be itching to add his first Irish Open title to his Major titles.

Last year’s action saw Soren Kjeldsen end his six-year wait for a title with a dramatic win in the three way play-off. Bernd Wiesberger and Eddie Pepperell who gave him company till the end had to be content with just that. The 40-year-old even set a clubhouse mark in the process to give the spectators something extra to remember the tournament by.

This year’s roster will include some well-known names, after the overwhelming success of the 2015 edition. The field is led by the reigning Masters Champion Danny Willett and boasts eight Major Champions among 12 top-50 ranked players in the Official World Golf Rankings. The local charge will be led by McIlroy which also consists of 2007 champion Padraig Harrington, Darren Clarke and Graeme McDowell.

Also in the mix are Germany’s Martin Kaymer, Korea’s Y.E. Yang and South Africa’s Trevor Immelman making this one of the strongest fields in the history of the tournament! No wonder then that the Irish open is one of the most eagerly awaited tournaments of 2016.

Golf Tips For Dubai Duty Free Irish Open

Our first tip goes to a young man on the rise Matthew Fitzpatrick. Although his form has been patchy in recent weeks he is a man that tends to raise his game for the big events. As his T7 showing in The Masters will confirm. Because of his global appeal he has been mixing it up on both tours and has two top tens on the PGA Tour to his name from 8 tournaments. Not stella we know but he should definitely be more at home at The K Club. Has won on the European Tour as recently as October when he beat a very strong field to take The British Masters by two shots from Shane Lowry. He is our idea of the winner but will need his A game to prevail.

We go for an Irishman for our second tip and Graeme McDowell has returned to some good form. His T9 at The Players Championship last week was an excellent effort, especially his third round 69 in what has been described as one of the most difficult courses to have been played. This was mainly due to lightning quick greens and some harsh pin positions. This led to a host of 3 and 4 putts and then of course Garcia’s 6 putt. McDowell finished with three birdies and we take him to bring that form with him in his pursuit of The Irish Open.

Graeme McDowell to win the Dubai Duty Free Irish Open 28/1 – 1pt each way

So have you heard the one about the Englishman, Irish and Scotsman!!! Amazingly our last tip for the Irish Open goes to scotsman Russell Knox another who played at The Players last week he finished T19 but that does not tell the whole story. He had three rounds in the sixty’s but a third round 80 which included a nine on the infamous 17th derailed his challenge for the title. He is obviously in form and to shoot a final round 68 after that 80 shows he has got the right stuff. We should get some decent odds and Knox has to be our third tip.
