England v Iceland Preview Euro 2016

England under-performed in the group stages, but are still favourites to win this clash at odds of 8/15 with Coral.

Despite being favourites to top group B, England managed to finish second in the group behind Wales after winning one and drawing two of their games.

An opening game 1-1 draw with Russia was disappointing, while the second game brought their only win of the group, as the Three Lions scored a stoppage-time winner in a 2-1 defeat of Wales. The final group game saw England frustrated again, as they drew with Slovakia 0-0.

Despite their under-performance in France, England will still be expected to easily defeat Iceland, who are the smallest nation to ever take part in a European Championships.

Iceland were a surprise package in the group stages, but are very much underdogs to win this match at odds of 15/2 with Betfair.

Just like their opponents Iceland qualified by winning once and drawing twice. However, considering they were one of the underdogs in Group F it was a massive achievement for the Nordic nation.

Lars Lagerback’s team sealed their place in the knockout stages with a stoppage-time 2-1 win over the much-fancied Austrian’s in their final group game. The win meant that Iceland finished above group favourites Portugal in the group.

Past Meetings

These two teams have only ever met twice in international football, with neither of those games being competitive ones.

England first met Iceland in 1982 in a friendly as the Three Lions were preparing for the World Cup. The game finished in a 1-1 draw in Icelandic capital Reykjavik.

The only other time these two have met was back in 2004 in another friendly game prior to Euro 2004 and ended in the Three Lions hammering their 6-1 at Eastlands. Current England captain Wayne Rooney scored a brace to help secure the big win.

Iceland co-boss Lars Lagerback faced England four times as Sweden boss and was unbeaten, winning once and drawing the other three encounters.

Team and Selection News

England have a fully-fit squad to choose from and boss Roy Hodgson has some big decisions to make. The Three Lions boss rotated his squad last time out with the likes of Wayne Rooney, Dele Alli, Kyle Walker and Danny Rose relegated to the bench.

The quartet is likely to return following the underwhelming performance of their replacements last time out.

Iceland also has a fully-fit squad and Lars Lagerback is likely to choose the same starting line-up from the win over Austria, which means midfielder Arnor Ingvi Traustason, who scored the winner last time out is likely to start the game on the bench.

Possible England team line-up: Hart, Walker, Cahill, Smalling, Rose, Dier, Alli, Rooney, Vardy, Lallana, Sturridge

Possible Iceland team line-up: Halldorsson, Saevarsson, Arnason, Sigurdsson, Skulason, Gudmundsson, Gunnarsson, G. Sigurdsson, Bjarnason, Sigthorsson, Bodvarsson

Betting Tip

England are heavy favourites going into this clash, despite Iceland being one of the surprise packages in France. However the Three Lions have struggled to breakdown the likes of Russia and Slovakia in the group stages, so it is likely to be a low-scoring England win.
