Everton v Manchester United FA Cup semi-final Preview

Two North West teams clash on Saturday evening in the FA Cup semi-final, as Everton and Manchester United go head-to-head at Wembley.

Everton head in to the clash in low spirits, having beaten 4-0 by Liverpool in the Merseyside derby at Anfield on Wednesday night. Goals from Divock Origi, Mamadou Sakho, Daniel Sturridge and Philippe Coutinho capped an awful night for the Toffees.

The sending-off of Argentinian centre-back Ramiro Funes Mori for a poor tackle on Origi only added more misery for the men from Merseyside.

The Toffees run in the FA Cup has been a bright spot in what has been a season of underachievement for Roberto Martinez’s men in the Premier League.

The side from Merseyside made it through to the last four of this competition thanks to a Romelu Lukaku brace in a 2-0 win over the Belgian’s former-club Chelsea.

Manchester United have started to find form in the past few weeks and last time out comfortably defeated Crystal Palace 2-0 at Old Trafford. The Red Devils path to the last four was not easy though, as they needed a replay to defeat Premier League rivals West Ham in the quarter-final.

The Red Devils recent decent run has been built on a solid backline that has kept four clean sheets in their last six outings in all competitions.

Facts And Figures

These two teams have met 11 times in this competition, with Everton recording six wins and United recording five wins.

Everton have won two out of the last three meetings in this competition, including at this very stage in 2009.

Manchester United have won three of the last four meetings between these two teams.

Everton boss Roberto Martinez has a poor record against the Red Devils. The Spaniard has faced United on 14 occasions and recorded just four wins, while losing ten times.

Everton have not conceded a goal in this season’s FA Cup. However Martinez’s side have been poor of late in front of goal, scoring just twice in their last six games.

Everton have failed to win any of their last six games and their last victory came in that 2-0 quarter-final win over Chelsea.

Team Selection And News

Everton have major problems heading into this clash, especially at centre-back. Phil Jagielka is expected to miss out through injury, while Ramiro Funes Mori is suspended and John Stones is a doubt after experiencing stomach cramps in the Merseyside derby. Full-back Seamus Coleman is also expected to miss out.

Muhamed Besic looks likely to start at centre-back and the Toffees are hopeful that Stones will recover in time. Midfielder Gareth Barry also looks set to miss out having also picked-up an injury in the Merseyside derby.

United’s only absentees are expected to be full-back Luke Shaw and midfielder Bastian Schweinsteiger, who both look set to miss the remainder of the campaign.

Possible Everton Semi Final Team Selection

Robles, Oviedo, Stones, Besic, Baines, McCarthy, Cleverley, Mirallas, Barkley, Lennon, Lukaku

Possible Manchester United Semi Final Team Selection

De Gea, Valencia, Smalling, Blind, Darmian, Schneiderlin, Lingard, Mata, Rooney, Martial, Rashford

Match Prediction

Everton heads into this clash with a number of problems, injured players and poor form being their two main issues and in contrast United head into it in confident mood. I cannot see past a Red Devils win in this clash.
