Everton take on Southampton at Goodison Park on Saturday in the Premier League, as the visitors continue their pursuit of continental football for next season.

Everton’s indifferent run of form continued last time out in the Premier League, as the Toffees drew 0-0 at Crystal Palace, despite having Republic of Ireland midfielder James McCarthy sent-off early in the second half.

The draw means that Everton are now 12th in the Premier League and have reached the 40 points total. The draw will do little to alleviate the pressure on Toffees boss Roberto Martinez with the side from Merseyside majorly underachieving in the top-flight this season.

Southampton recorded a comfortable 3-1 victory against Newcastle at St Mary’s last time out, with Shane Long, Graziano Pelle and Victor Wanyama getting on the scoresheet. In truth the Saints cruised to victory, as the Magpies were poor.

The Saints have hit decent form of late, having won three out of their last four Premier League games and put themselves in with an outside chance of a top four finish. However, they are seven points behind fourth-place Manchester City.

Facts And Figures

These two teams have met 33 times in the Premier League, with Everton recording 15 victories, while Southampton have claimed nine wins and nine games have been drawn.

Everton have dominated the 16 Premier League meetings at Goodison Park, recording 12 victories. Three games have finished in draws and Southampton have recorded just one win.

Southampton have won just two of the last ten meetings in all competitions, with both of those victories coming at St Marys.

Everton boss Roberto Martinez has a decent record against the Saints, having recorded five wins and two draws from nine meetings and also suffered two defeats.

Southampton have failed to score in three of their last five away games in the Premier League.

There has been under 2.5 goals scored in six out of Southampton’s last seven away games in the top-flight.

Everton have lost their last three home games in the Premier League.

Everton have now failed to win any of their last five games in the Premier League.

Team Selection And News

The Toffees are expected to be without captain Phil Jagielka through injury, while midfielder James McCarthy will miss out through suspension. Tom Cleverley, Leon Osman, Steven Pienaar and Darron Gibson all remain doubts. Muhamed Besic is likely to replace McCarthy in the starting line-up.

The visitors have doubts over centre-back Florin Gardos, midfielder Steven Davis and striker Charlie Austin. The side from the south coast could name an unchanged starting line-up after that commanding performance against Newcastle last time out.

Possible Everton Team Selection

Robles, Coleman, Stones, Funes Mori, Baines, Barry, Besic, Deulofeu, Barkley, Lennon, Lukaku

Possible Southampton Team Selection

Forster, Martina, Fonte, Van Dijk, Bertrand, Clasie, Wanyama, Mane, Long, Tadic, Pelle

Match Prediction

Everton have struggled for home wins this season and I can see them struggling to record a home win this clash. Southampton have found some form and I expect Ronald Koeman’s side managing to come away from Merseyside with a point.
