Lewis Hamilton got roaring back into contention for the Championship with a win at Monaco Grand Prix, aided to a large extent by the miscalculations of Daniel Ricciardo and the Red Bull Racing team. Now as the Formula 1 bandwagon moves to Montreal for the Canadian Grand Prix on June 12, a busy schedule of six races over the next eight weeks could decide this season’s winner.

About the track
Canada is the seventh round of the season and one of the most popular races on the calendar. It is also one of the most followed Grand Prix’s across the globe and in 2005 was rated as the third most watched sporting event – behind Super Bowl and the UEFA Champions League final. The tight confines and high-speed nature of the circuit will generally guarantee exciting races.

Michael Schumacher is the racer with the most number of wins (seven) here and is followed by Lewis Hamilton. The Brit has won four times here including last season. Ferrari and McLaren are the most successful teams here winning 13 races each.

There’s history involved with the Canadian Grand Prix with fatal accidents, sponsorship disputes and enthralling races often hogging the headlines. The circuits poses a unique threat to the racers as groundhogs attempt to cross the track posing a safety threat.

Rewind 2015
Lewis Hamilton started on pole and was calm throughout his victory over team mate Nico Rosberg. Though Hamilton never enjoyed more than a second advantage over his team mate, the result was never in doubt.
There were expectations of a Rosberg win that could challenge Hamilton’s grip on the Championship. But it wasn’t to be as Canadian Grand Prix, for once, failed to live up to its reputation for drama.

Canada held its first round of the world championship in 1978 which was won by Gilles Villeneuve. And in 1982, post his tragic death at the Belgian Grand Prix, the circuit was renamed after him. A lap at the Gilles Villeneuve circuit measures 4.361 Km and the total race distance is 305.27 km over 70 laps.

Story of the year so far
Rosberg was the driver to catch for the early part of 2016 with four consecutive wins and at one point looking unstoppable. But Red Bull’s Max Verstappen bucked the trend in the Spanish Grand Prix. This was followed by Hamilton’s victory at Monaco.

Although the German still leads the driver standings by 106 points to 82 over the Brit, another win for Hamilton combined with a poor race for Rosberg could open up the challenge for the driver’s Championship. At the same time don’t forget the threat of Red Bull’s Daniel Ricciardo, who was unlucky not to win at Monaco.

Can the Bulls tame the Mercedes?
Ricciardo will be eager to banish the bad memories of Monaco and could be the one to watch out for in Montreal. He is a dark horse in the punters market at odds of 7/1 at Ladbrokes, while Nico Rosberg and Lewis Hamilton are favorites at 9/4 with Betfair and 6/5 with Betfred respectively. As always it does come down to qualifying and with that in mind we take Rosberg to grab pole position at a generous 15/8 with Coral bookmakers.
