France v Romania Euro 2016 Group A Preview

Tournament hosts France kick-off their Euro 2016 campaign by facing Romania at the Stade de France on Friday, as Les Bleus look to justify their tag as favourites for the competition.

Didier Deschamps heads into this clash as 1/3 favourites with William Hill to win this clash and kick-off their campaign with maximum points.

Les Bleus qualified for this tournament automatically, so did not need to play qualifiers. Having not played a competitive match since 2014 the French have been in good form in friendlies matches, winning eight of their last nine games.

The exception was a 2-0 loss at Wembley against England, following the terror attacks on Paris. During that run Deschamps side have beaten Portugal, Germany and the Netherlands. Surprisingly France are ranked a lowly 21st in the world rankings.

Romania were one of the surprise packages of Euro 2016 qualifying and are odds of 14/1 with Winner Sports to shock the hosts. Anghel Iordanescu’s side finished second behind Northern Ireland in Group F, but were unbeaten in a very tight group.

Their qualification for the finals was built on a strong defensive record, as they conceded just two goals in Group F, the least of any team in qualifying.

The Romanians were not prolific in front of goal scoring just 11 goals in their ten games, but due to their fantastic defensive record they qualified for just their second major tournament in 16 years. They head into this clash having lost just one of their last 19 matches, which came in a 4-3 home defeat against Ukraine last time out.

Previous Meetings

Recent meetings between these two teams have been relatively tight, with four out of the last five meetings finishing in draws. The other game came in qualification for Euro 2012, when Les Bleus defeated their opponents 2-0 under Laurent Blanc.

These two teams met in the finals of Euro 2008 and the game finished goalless. Romania have faced France in in the Stade de France as recently as 2009 in a World Cup qualifier that finished 1-1. Current Romania boss Iordanescu has a poor record against France spanning two spells, drawing once and losing three times.

Team and Selection News

France are in good shape heading into this tournament with some of their players heading into this tournament on the back of fantastic campaigns. Les Bleus are without centre-back Raphael Varane winger Franck Ribery and full-back Jeremy Mathieu through injury. Star striker Karim Benzema has been left out due to his part in an alleged blackmail plot.

Atletico Madrid striker Antoine Griezmann is likely to start up front, while Laurent Koscielny could partner Eliaquim Mangala in the heart of the defence.

Romania had a very settled team in qualification and that is unlikely to change in this clash. Iordanescu is likely to go with the tried and trusted backline of Cristian Sapunaru, Vlad Chiriches, Dragoș Grigore and veteran Razvan Rat.

Possible France team line-up: Lloris, Sagna, Koscielny, Mangala, Evra, Matuidi, Kante, Pogba, Payet, Griezmann, Martial

Possible Romania team line-up: Tatarusanu, Sapunaru, Chiriches, Grigore, Rat, Hoban, Pintilii, Torje, Sanmartean, Stancu, Andone

Betting tips

All the pressure will be on France to open their campaign on home soil with a win, but Romania are a resolute team, so this is likely to be a tight affair.

France look like the likely winners, but bet on an entertaining affair at your peril, as this has low scoring game written all over it.
