So, the flat’s first big meeting of the year is here and Doncaster looks set fair for a very decent afternoon of action. Not to be outdone however, the jumps action is also of decent quality with Kelso, Newbury and Uttoxeter hosting decent, competitive stuff. The all weather action at Kempton is also of interest and Navan have a couple of very decent contests too.

I have put up 6 selections today, highlighted in bold and reviewed all the big races at all the meetings below:

I have put up 6 selections today, highlighted in bold and reviewed all the big races at all the meetings below:

14.15 Spring Mile
A 22 runner affair to kick off the card and the big unknown is if there is any draw bias. The sensible option is to choose one high and one low, however, I really fancy Right Touch in this contest (drawn 6) and he is the first main selection of the day. Richard Fahey is on record about how forward this boy is and how he wanted to make the cut in the Lincoln, so, I am expecting a big run. Of the dangers, Predominance for the Haggas stable, is a worthy favourite (drawn 15) as he is the least exposed of the runners and Lord of the Rock (drawn 4) could have a good contest with the selection.

14.45 Lincoln
What a class race this handicap has become. You need to be rated 98 and above just to get a run now, which means there are some group performers lurking. The favourite for the O’Meara camp, Lord of the Land, is following the same path as the stable star Mondaliste and must be high on everyone’s list, however, I think Mutarakez is the one to be on. Winner on his second start, then after 6 months off, M evidently goes well fresh and his down the field finish at Royal Ascot can be written off as he evidently had a problem as he has not been seen since.

15.20 Cammidge Trophy
Last weeks All Weather Championship winner, Alben Star, has advertised his well being, however, he loves a strong pace to run at and although there is a field of 14, there is no guarantee of a searing pace. I think at the likely prices, Shared Equity is of real interest and I will be having a nibble each way.

15.55 Doncaster Mile
Belardo is likely to start shortish for this contest, evens or thereabouts, however, once again I think the O’Meara team will have Custom Cut ready to roll and I fancy he can overturn the favourite.

16.30 Brocklesby
This race, in recent years, has lost a little of its sparkle, however, this years renewal could be a belter. The US sprint king Wesley Ward has sent across Create A Dream, although the draw in 14 of 14, is never ideal for an unraced horse. Mark Johnston’s 2 year olds have started the season like the mammoth winning machine we know his stable is, so, The Last Lion has to be respected, but, Bill Turner loves to target a horse at this race and we will side with Crucial Moment in this. The Turner stable has had a couple of winners this week and CM is pricier than his usual horses so, we hope the improved pedigree is a bonus.

14.20 Class 2 Handicap Hurdle
With the Richards stable having an up turn in fortunes last week we put up our second selection of the day in Isaacstown Lad. This is a really decent contest with Silsol and Shades of Midnight in opposition, however, IL should have a decent pace to aim at and I am expecting him to come through late.

13.55 Plus 10 Stakes
This race is of interest as it contains another Wesley Ward runner, New Trier. This surface should suit the US runner well and the draw in 4 is better than the Mark Johnston newcomer Dusker. There are also runners from the Dascombe and Hannon stables, all of whom, can ready one on debut so should be an informative contest.

15.00 Class 2 Handicap
Another of our selections runs here, Dougan. From an ideal draw in 2 I can see D getting a great position tracking the pace before pouncing in the final two furlongs.

Back Dougan in the 15.00 Kempton – Best odds of 5/2 with Coral

16.10 Fillies Stakes
Volunteer Point turns out quickly from her All Weather Championship success and the draw could not be better in 4. This is not a deep race and although I think VP can maintain her winning run, dangers should be My Call and Redstart.

16.40 Grade 2 Chase
Only a small field of 5, but high quality. Roads to Riches, fresh from an excellent run at Cheltenham, should take all the beating but Smashing in this smaller field could bounce back and Foxrock always gives everything.

14.00 Novice Hurdle
Ozzie the Oscar won really well at Taunton last time out when the Hobbs stable were having a wretched run. The way OtO won suggests he is more than capable of carrying the penalty, although there may well be some decent types in opposition.

Back Ozzie the Oscar in the 14.00 Newbury – Best odds of evens with Coral

15.40 Novice Hurdle Finale
The selection for this has been withdrawn a few times recently due to the ground, so must be ready to rock and roll, At First Light. As you can imagine it is a deep race and top weight Ruby Rambler is listed as the main danger with Briery Queen next best.

17.25 NH Flat Race
This race is a definite for the watch and rewind brigade as it has many potentially decent types making their debuts / second runs. The Rebecca Curtis stable has had a belting 48 hours, so Summer Name has to be watched on debut. The Nicholls top weight comes with a reputation and Geraghty stays on to ride. For the day we will side with the Sherwood stable runner, Mankala, for the Rooney’s, however, with runners also from the Pipe, Fry, Henderson and Greatrex stables it is a deep race.

15.10 Class 4 Hurdle
A winner for us a couple of times already we stick with Transient Bay again. This will be tougher, up in grade and in weight, but the extra poundage would not have stopped him last time and we still expect a big run. The biggest concern I can see in this is less the competition but more the better ground, provided TB can handle the quicker ground ….

Back Transient Bay in the 15.10 Uttoxeter – Best odds of 9/2 with Betfair

16.20 Class 4 Hurdle
Exactly the same as the race above, Loves Destination falls in the same category in every sense and I expect the same result.
