Germany v Poland Euro 2016 Group C Betting Preview

World champions Germany go head-to-head with neighbours Poland in a game that could decide who tops Group C at Euro 2016.

Germany recorded a win in their opening game against Ukraine and are favourites at odds of 8/13 with Coral to win this clash.

Joachim Low’s side kicked-off their campaign with a 2-0 win over Ukraine on Sunday. Die Mannschaft took the lead through a Shkodran Mustafi header on 19 minutes. Ukraine offered little attacking threat, although Yevhen Konoplyanka did see an effort cleared off the line.

Germany sealed their victory in stoppage-time, as veteran midfielder Bastian Schweinsteiger scored his first international goal since 2009.

The win means that Germany took control of the group and currently sits above Poland on goal difference.

Poland also recorded a victory in their opening game, but are very much underdogs to repeat the trick in this one, as they are odds of 11/2 with Betfair to record a win in this clash.

Adam Nawalka’s team kicked-off their campaign with a 1-0 victory over Northern Ireland. The only goal of the game arrived on 51 minutes. Winger Jakub Blaszczykowski produced a superb cut back to in-form striker Arkadiusz Milik in the area, and the Ajax forward fired through Craig Cathcart’s legs and past Michael McGovern.

Poland were comfortable against the Northern Irish, who hardly threatened Wojciech Szczesny’s goal in the 90 minutes. This is Poland’s most difficult game and anything they take from it will be regarded as a bonus, with a game against Ukraine to come in the last group game.

Past Meetings

These two teams have met 20 times in competitive international matches, with Germany recording 13 wins, six games finishing in draws and Poland winning just once.

The two teams met at the World Cup in 2006, when Germany won 1-0 to knock their neighbours out of the competition. The pair were again paired at Euro 2008 and Germany once again prevailed 2-0 courtesy of a brace from Lukas Podolski.

The most recent meetings came in qualifying for this tournament though, as Poland triumphed 2-0 in Warsaw and Germany won 3-1 in the reverse fixture.

Team and Selection News

Germany may decide to field an unchanged team after their opening game win. However, first choice centre-back Mats Hummels could come back into the team in place of Shkodran Mustafi, despite the Valencia player’s goal in the last match.

Poland could also field the same starting eleven from last time out. Midfielder Kamil Grosicki is doubtful for the clash, but is the Poles only injury concern.

Possible Germany team line-up:
Neuer, Howedes, Boateng, Hummels, Hector, Khedira, Kroos, Muller, Ozil, Draxler, Gotze

Possible Poland team line-up:
Szczesny, Piszczek, Glik, Pazdan, Jedrzejczyk, Blaszczykowski, Krychowiak, Maczynski, Kapustka, Milik, Lewandowski

Betting Tip
Poland have proven during qualification that they cause Germany problems and this will likely be Die Mannschaft’s hardest game in the group stage. However, I do expect Germany to come out top in a narrow victory. With both teams better at attacking than defending there could also be goals.
