Grand National Racing Tips Saturday 9th April

by 8th April 2016

It’s Grand National day at Aintree and we have racing tips for each of the races. But our main free racing tips run at meetings elsewhere.

As for today’s selections, Theinval was done no favours by the slow pace of the race and could never get in a blow. Nuts Well duly won a poor contest. Apache Storm was recalcitrant to post and pulled far too hard in the ground to end up a very disappointing favourite.

As for tomorrow I have to once again mention that the supporting card to Aintree is incredibly disappointing. I fancy a few at Sedgefield but the quality of the races is not great, I just have an inkling for a few. All will be revealed ………………… but we start with Aintree. High quality horses on show, however, it makes for uncompetitive races:

Grand National Meeting At Aintree

13.45 Grade 3 Handicap Hurdle
A 22 runner field and as you would expect, a difficult puzzle to solve. Interesting runners include Kings Palace for the in form David Pipe, Squouateur for Gordon Elliott and McManus looking to put the slightly disappointing Cheltenham run behind him, Urban Hymn for the Jefferson stable, Ballycross for Twiston Davies off a light weight, Eshtiaal another for Elliott and Murrayana for the all conquering Tizzard camp and right off the bottom Minella Daddy for the another in form stable in Peter Bowen. However, my selection for the race is If In Doubt for Hobbs / Geraghty who was very unlucky at Cheltenham and compensation awaits.

14.25 Grade 1 Novice Hurdle
On all known form and if he stands up – Yorkhill will come home first with Bello Conti to provide a Mullins 1-2.

15.00 Grade 1 Novice Chase
As above, as long as Douvan stands up he wins and we select Alisier D’Irlande to lead out and get picked up by Douvan.

15.40 Stayers Hurdle Grade 1
Another uncompetitive renewal as Thistlecrack looks certain to continue his stellar season. Shaneshill and the interesting Different Gravey to fight out second.

16.20 Listed Handicap Chase
At last another race we can get our teeth into, although with 15 runners it falls annoyingly short of 4 places! Mystifiable looks sure to be popular and a worthy favourite but I think, at the prices, Warden Hill for the very in form (on the flat at least) Mick Channon stable is worth chancing on his first run since April last year.

17.15 The BIG ONE Grand National
What can one say?! The Grand National is now a real top class staying chase with horses needing a rating of 145 or over to get in. This, of course, means those at the top of the handicap have a much better chance than previously and the returning champion Many Clouds is sure to be there or thereabouts. In fact all of the horses at the top of the betting have chances but I am prepared to rule through Silvaniaco Conti (will not stay) and The Druids Nephew (not coming into the race anywhere close to the form of last year).

So, of those at the top of the betting Many Clouds is the choice.

Of those at bigger prices my top choice is Gilgamboa for Ireland. He was fifth of fifteen in the Ryanair Chase at Cheltenham over a wholly inadequate 2 miles 5 furlongs and a marathon trip is what he needs so to finish in the top 5 was an excellent performance and prep. The other one with a decent chance is Kruzhlinin for Philip Hobbs. Fancied at Cheltenham he hit every fence down the back straight but still managed to finish 5th, so the concern is his jumping. If he gets into a rhythm he could be dangerous.

The last to mention is Buywise, less so for the horse as he also has jumping issues, but for the jockey. Paul Moloney has guided his mounts into the places for 7 straight nationals and it is not inconceivable that he can do it again.

18.10 Amateur Handicap Hurdle
A low key finale and a 22 runner getting out stakes! The selection in this is Automated for the Irish stable of Gordon Elliott.

16.40 Chepstow – First selection of the day runs here and it is Streets of Promise for the Scudamore stable. In great form and looking progressive until falling last time out I think he will bounce back today.

16.15 Lingfield – The Gosden / Dettori combination had a great time last season and Predilection is a confident selection to take this Listed prize on seasonal debut.

The above are the main 4 selections today, but I did mention in the write up that I fancied a few at Sedgefield so if you are felling adventurous:

14.05 Benny’s Well – super jumper and front runner.
15.20 Sakhee’s City – in form and stable is going well.
15.55 Discoverie- in form, good jumper and stable is flying.
17.00 Agent Louise – only horse in any sort of form.
