Italy v Sweden Euro 2016 Group E Betting Preview And Tips

Italy face Sweden on Friday afternoon in Group E of Euro 2016, in what could be a big match in determining who makes it through to the knockout stages.

Italy opened their campaign by winning 2-0 against Belgium and they are once again favourites to claim victory in this clash at odds of 17/20 with William Hill.

The Azzurri were written-off by many before the tournament, but overcame the highly-rated Belgians 2-0 on Monday night. Antonio Conte’s side took the lead on 32 minutes through midfielder Emanuele Giaccherini and doubled their lead in stoppage-time through a powerful effort from Graziano Pelle.

The win put Conte’s side to the top of the group and another win would virtually assure the Azzurri of a place in the knockout stages.

Sweden were poor in their opening game a 1-1 draw with Republic of Ireland and are underdogs to win this game at odds of 9/2 with Coral.

Erik Hamren’s side may consider themselves slightly lucky to have gained a point from the Ireland game, as they failed to get a shot on target during the game. Ireland took the lead just after the break through a superbly taken volley by Wes Hoolahan.

The Swedes equalised in the last 20 minutes though, as centre-back Ciaran Clark headed a Zlatan Ibrahimovic cross past his own ‘keeper.

The draw would have been regarded as a bad result prior to the game, but given what had happened during, it was probably well received.

Sweden know that they need to try to get something out of this game, as this group could be very tight going into the final round of matches.

Past Meetings

Italy have faced Sweden on 22 occasions, winning ten times, drawing six times and losing times. In competitive games its four wins apiece and two draws.

The two teams went head-to-head in 2000, as the Azzurri recorded a group stage win. They also met in Euro 2004 when the two teams drew 1-1, but the result was enough to see Italy eliminated from the competition.

The last time the two teams met was back in 2009 in Hamren’s first game as Sweden boss and his side suffered a 1-0 defeat in Cesena courtesy of a goal Giorgio Chiellini.

Team and Selection News

Both teams appear to have fully-fit squads for this clash. Italy boss Antonio Conte may stick with his winning starting line-up from last time out, but full-back Matteo Di Sciglio has a chance of starting in place of Matteo Darmian at right wing-back.

Sweden started with two up front last time out, but may revert to Zlatan Ibrahimovic up front on his own and an extra midfielder added to the starting line-up. Midfielder Albin Ekdal could be a contender to replace Marcus Berg.

Possible Italy team line-up:
Buffon, Barzagli, Bonucci, Chiellini, De Sciglio, Giaccherini De Rossi, Parolo, Candreva, Eder, Pelle

Possible Sweden team line-up:
Isaksson, Lustig, Lindelof, Granqvist, Olsson, Larsson, Lewicki, Kallstrom, Ekdal, Forsberg, Ibrahimovic

Betting Tip
Sweden were poor in their opening game and there was little to suggest that they have anything to worry Italy, bar Ibrahimovic of course. I can see this being an Italy victory, but it is unlikely to be pretty.
