Venue & Prize Fund
The Dutch Course, Spijk, Netherlands • Purse: €1,800,000

Just when the whole world will be looking at the BMW Championships and closely following the action in the FedExCup play-offs, there is action elsewhere on the European Tour.

The KLM Open which is an annual golfing tournament played in the sports crazy Netherlands – and a regular name on the European calendar since the Tour’s inception in 1972 – will also tee off this week. But make no mistake the KLM Open attracts its own share of attention proving to be a breather from the rigours of the FedExCup action.

The tournament was founded in 1912 and is originally known as the Dutch Open. The advent of different sponsors resulted in multiple changes to the tournament’s name with KLM being the latest.

Along with the name, the tournament has also witnessed changes in venue and timing on the calendar. Many venues have been used but for now until 2018 the KLM Open will be played on The Dutch Course, Spijk, Netherlands. The prize fund (€1.8 million) may not be huge but the tournament is still a hit among the European Tour regulars.

The Dutch Course, designed by Colim Montgomerie is situated in Spijk and is fairly unique in the the fact that it is an inland links course. Monty who has done a brilliant job in making it one of the finest courses in the Netherlands.

The course was opened in 2011 and has quickly established it’s reputation amongst golfers in the Netherlands. With greens getting up to 12.5 on the stimp meter lets hope it does not blow too much otherwise it could prove difficult to keep the ball on the greens.

Players arriving here this week will find a new challenge than in previous years and it will be very interesting to see who comes out on top with no past course form to go on.

2015 action saw Thomas Pieters win by a single shot with the Belgian winning in dramatic circumstances.

A play-off looked inevitable and was very much on the cards but Lee Slattery faltered on the last hole to hand the Belgian a much-deserved victory. He will return to defend his title and after being selected as a surprise entrant to the European Ryder Cup Team, Pieters will look forward to an encore at the KLM. He looks very good for at least a top-five finish here.

Leading the local challenge will be the marvellous Joost Luiten. It has been a great 2016 season for the Dutchman – six top 10 finishes in eleven events and two runners-up finishes, Luiten is strongly expected to figure prominently here at the KLM Open.

Also keep an eye on Chris Wood, the 28-year-old Englishman is widely hailed as one of the best players of the new generation. He has never finished in the top ten here but could be a strong candidate to do so in his eighth consecutive appearance.

Another leading fancy who must go well is Alex Noren, who arrives on the back off a play-off win against Scott Hend in the Omega European Masters. He will be well fancied to follow up this week. It could be a titanic battle between Noren and Pieters who are undoubtably the hottest players on the European Tour the last few weeks.

Golf Tips For The KLM Open

Our first tip for the KLM has to go to last weeks winner Alex Noren, whose form figures for his last five tournaments read 1st, 2nd, T49, T46 and 1st. The two top fifties came in majors so he is the outstanding prospect in this field. When he is in contention he usually gets the job done as his play-off win against Scott Hend showed last week in the Omega European Masters. he is available at 17/2 second favourite just behind the Belgium Pieters. 2pt win.
