Liverpool and Aston Villa go head-to-head at Anfield on Saturday in the Premier League, as both sides look to rediscover their winning form in the league.
Liverpool are now on a run of five games without a win in all competitions, after winning their opening two league matches. Last time out the Reds were frustrated by Premier League new boys Norwich, as the Canaries went away from Anfield with a 1-1 draw.
Substitute Danny Ings opened the scoring for the Reds, but Canaries centre-back Russell Martin equalised for Alex Neil’s team and the men from Norfolk claimed a hard-fought point.
The Reds poor form has led to Brendan Rodgers critics questioning whether the Northern Irishman is the man to move the Merseysider’s forward. To add to the Reds frustration from that game, summer signing Christian Benteke had to be replaced at half-time due to sustaining a hamstring injury.
The visitors are also on a poor run of form and have suffered defeats in their last two league matches. Last time out the Villans suffered a 1-0 home defeat against Midlands rivals West Brom. That defeat was Villa’s fourth in their first six league games this season.
It seems that the Villans are struggling to gel as a team, after the numerous new arrivals in the summer. However, Villa has hope in the fact that they have a good recent record at Anfield.

Facts And Figures

Liverpool has the better head-to-head Premier League record between these two teams, having won 24 of the 46 games played. Villa has collected 12 wins and ten games have been drawn.
The Reds also have the better head-to-head record at Anfield, winning 12 of the 23 Premier League games played on home soil. The Villans have collected six wins at Anfield and five games have been drawn.
Despite Liverpool’s better record at Anfield, the Midlanders are unbeaten in their last three trips to the famous old ground and have claimed victory in two of those three games.

Team News

The side from Merseyside are without captain Jordan Henderson and full-back Jon Flanagan, while centre-back Kolo Toure and striker Christian Benteke are both doubts.
If Benteke does not recover in time to feature against his old club then Danny Ings is likely to start up front, after coming off the bench to score last time out.
The visitors are without defender Jores Okore, as well as midfielders Idrissa Gueye and Craig Gardner, as all three are carrying injuries. On-loan centre-back Tiago Ilori is ineligible to face his parent club, while full-back Jose Angel Crespo and winger Adama Traore are doubts for the clash.

Possible Liverpool line-up: Mignolet, Can, Skrtel, Lovren, Clyne, Milner, Lucas, Moreno, Coutinho, Ings, Sturridge

Possible Aston Villa line-up: Guzan, Hutton, Richards, Lescott, Amavi, Westwood, Sanchez, Sinclair, Grealish, Gil, Agbonlahor

Liverpool vs Aston Villa Match Prediction

Despite their struggles in recent games, I think Liverpool may just shade this encounter. The return of Daniel Sturridge to fitness and the starting line-up last weekend was a major boost. Villa has been struggling of late and the side from Merseyside are desperately in need of a win.
