Venue and Prize Fund
Himmerland Golf & Spa Resort, Farsø, Denmark • Purse: €1,800,000

‘Made in Denmark’ is a European Tour Golf tournament that is played annually at the Himmerland Golf and Spa Resort in Farso. The tournament is one of the youngest around having started only in 2014. But there is no shortage of excitement as golf is hugely popular in this part of the world.

The inaugural tournament itself attracted over 80,000 fans which is an indicator of the pull of this event. A modest purse of € 1.8 million for the 2016 tournament which is played from August 25 – 28 will mean that it may not attract the top rankers from across the globe.

Himmerland Golf and Spa resort was originally designed by Jan Cedermolm and measures 7, 033 yards with a par score of 71. Gusts of wind that can get up to 30 mph will be a major factor for the players here. The course was completely redesigned by Philip Spogaard in 2012.

Two par-5 holes on the back challenge the players – 11th hole at 644 yards and 13th hole at 628 yards. But the best-known hole is the 128-yard par-3 on the 16th. Huge crowds make their way on to the steep banks surrounding the greens creating a great atmosphere for the players. This earned the sobriquet of ‘Himmerland Hill’ for the hole and with it a great name for the course.

This year’s tournament will be crucial for Ryder Cup hopefuls – not the least for Shane Lowry. The Irishman will make a maiden appearance at this tournament which will be the final counting event for the 41st edition of the Ryder Cup.

Lowry will be joined by European Ryder Cup team captain Darren Clarke who will have one eye on the performances of his competitors. Martin Kaymer will also be making his debut at this tournament and will not just be hunting for his 12th European Tour title but also chasing a wildcard for the Ryder Cup.

Other Ryder Cup hopefuls who are scheduled to tee off this weekend include Englishmen Matthew Fitzpatrick and Chris Wood. Both these players are currently in automatic qualification spots. Home favourite Soren Kjeldsen will also be looking to impress his captain Clarke with a strong showing to secure a wildcard pick.

Last year’s winner was Englishman David Horsey who became the first Englishman to win this tournament. He followed Scotland’s Marc Warren to be the second winner at ‘Made in Denmark’. It will be interesting to see if anyone from the United Kingdom would continue this trend.

Backing Wood or Fitzpatrick isn’t too bad of an option considering the fact they are both winners on the European Tour this year and have finally managed to get enough points to make Darren’s Ryder Cup team. They could be relaxed enough now to make a real impact on this tournament, where as others are still playing for wildcard entries in to the team. Will the pressure tell on the chasers, we shall know more come Sunday.

On the whole, the ‘Made in Denmark’ 2016 tournament looks to be a cracker with so many scenarios in play.

The fact Shane Lowry is playing in Denmark this week and not in the first play off tournament of the Fedex Cup series is a tip in itself. He will be trying desperately to get a wild card slot in Darren’s team. He has had somewhat disappointing season so far and has something to prove but did finish second in the U.S open although he should really of won that event but for a final round 76 to scupper his chances. Back on European soil Lowry to come good again at odds of 22/1

Ashun Wu is overpriced at 125 with Bet365, for a player that won has won the Lyoness open back in June this year. If you take out the first five or so in the betting and Wu gets the putter working he could definitely sneak a place here in Denmark.
