Manchester United v Tottenham Preview

Manchester United host Tottenham at Old Trafford in the opening game of the new Premier League season on Saturday.
The home side have spent heavily this summer in an attempt to challenge for the Premier League title this season.
The likes of Memphis Depay, Mateo Darmian, Bastian Schweinsteiger, Morgan Schneiderlin and Sergio Romero have all arrived at Old Trafford this summer, while high-profile stars Nani and Robin van Persie have left the club.
United have looked very effective in pre-season with victories over Club America, San Jose Earthquakes and European champions Barcelona. However their pre-season campaign finished with a 2-0 defeat at the hands of French giants PSG.
Tottenham have been rather more measured in the transfer market this summer. Spurs have added defenders Kevin Wimmer, Toby Alderweireld and Kieran Trippier to their squad, while young midfielder Dele Alli has arrived from MK Dons.
Spurs boss Mauricio Pochettino has decided to allow the likes of Younes Kaboul, Etienne Capoue, Paulinho, Lewis Holtby and Benjamin Stambouli to leave the club this summer.
Tottenham have enjoyed a mixed pre-season with wins over a Malaysia select Xl and Sydney FC, but have suffered defeats against Peterborough and the MLS All-Stars.

Facts And Figures

The recent fixtures between the two teams have produced mixed results, but United have won just one of the last six encounters with Spurs home and away. However, that win came in their last meeting at Old Trafford in March.
The side from north London have collected two wins in that six game spell, with both wins coming at Old Trafford. Although those two wins are their only wins on United soil in 23 visits to Old Trafford in the Premier League era.
In 46 Premier League encounters between the two teams Spurs have won just 5, with United claiming 30 wins and 11 games resulting in a draw.

Team News

The home side heads into this clash without the services of suspended midfielder Marouane Fellaini, while there are also doubts about the fitness of defender Marcos Rojo and striker Javier Hernandez.
United look set to give competitive debuts to Mateo Darmian, Bastian Schweinsteiger and Memphis Depay. New signing from Southampton Morgan Schneiderlin may have to settle for a place on the substitute’s bench, although Michael Carrick has a slight calf problem, so he could start in place of the England international.
Tottenham have a few injury doubts heading into the clash, with Hugo Lloris, Andros Townsend and Ryan Mason carrying knocks. Townsend looks the least likely to figure though, as the England winger has a shoulder injury.
Spurs have been relatively quiet in the transfer market and new Belgian defender Toby Alderweireld is likely to be the only debutant for the north London club, with Kevin Wimmer and Kieran Trippier likely to start the game on the bench.

Possible Manchester United line-up: De Gea, Darmian, Jones, Smalling, Shaw, Carrick, Schweinsteiger, Young, Mata, Depay, Rooney

Possible Tottenham line-up: Lloris, Walker, Alderweireld, Vertonghen, Rose, Bentaleb, Mason, Chadli, Eriksen, Lamela, Kane

This game is set be an exciting one, as four out of the last meetings between these two teams has produced three goals or more. Both teams have potent looking attacks, but I do believe that Louis van Gaal’s team may just shade this encounter by a one-goal margin.
