Betting preview for the Mexican Grand Prix

Lewis Hamilton grabbed a Championship lifeline by winning the US Grand Prix on Sunday and shaving seven points off his teammate Nico Rosberg’s lead. But the German still leads by 26 points and needs to be spectacularly poor to relinquish that. Stranger things have happened in the past, though, which gives this week’s Mexican Grand Prix an interesting prelude.

About the track
The Mexican Grand Prix has a unique place in the history of F1. A racetrack was built at the historic Magdalena Mixhuca Sports City way back in 1962 and the first F1 race was hosted the next year.

But after the 1970 event, Mexico lost its Grand Prix status as fans created pandemonium and sat on the edge of the track. The race made its return in 1986 running until 1992 on the renamed Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez circuit before making another return in 2015.

What makes this circuit unique is the high altitude. Situated at 2,200 m (or 7, 218 ft.) this is the highest of any circuits on the F1 calendar. With less oxygen available, the internal combustion unit will produce lesser power. Even the brakes are harder to cool making it a difficult proposition for the drivers and cars alike.

Rewind 2015
Last year’s action saw a measured drive from Rosberg to beat his teammate Lewis Hamilton. It was a close race with under two seconds separating the two drivers at the top. It was also the first time since 2006 that Ferrari recorded their first double DNF.

F1’s return to Mexico got a well-deserved and thrilling race with Rosberg winning it from the pole. The presence of safety cars at different stages added to the excitement but overall it was a race which the enthusiastic crowd enjoyed every bit.

The total race length at the Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez is 305.5 km with 71 laps in total with each lap measuring 4.3 km. The popularity of F1 in Mexico is unflinching even with all those years of absence.

The atmosphere for the drivers is electrifying with more than 40,000 spectators filling the stadium section and giving them a welcome. It’s a sight to behold and definitely a once-in-a-lifetime experience for the drivers.

Story of the year so far
Just when it seemed that the doors are shut on him, Hamilton drove a wonderful race in the US to give himself hope of a Championship victory. Rosberg is way ahead of him even now with 26 points separating him from this teammate. It was Hamilton’s first win since the German Grand Prix in July making one wonder if he has left it too late in the day. Rosberg can stamp his name on the title with even a second place finish in the remaining races.

Can Hamilton continue to stop Rosberg?
The betting market certainly thinks so as the odds on a Hamilton win are 8/11 with William Hill. Rosberg is slightly behind at odds of 15/8 again with William Hill. It is difficult to see beyond these two drivers unless they decide to take each other out. Back Rosberg to finish second and maybe back Daniel Ricciardo for a podium finish.
