Nedbank Golf Challenge Betting Preview

Rory Mcilroy misses the Nedbank Golf Challenge this week which leaves Henrik Stenson as the top ranked player. He is favourite to win but will he?

Venue & Prize Fund
Gary Player CC, Sun City, South Africa • Purse: $7,000,000

The Nedbank Golf Challenge which was previously known as the Million Dollar Challenge is one of the prestigious tournaments played at the Gary Player Country Club in Sun City, South Africa. It started its journey as a non-official event but from 2013 it became an official tournament for the Sunshine Tour and European Tour.

The tournament is usually played in the first week of December but it has been moved forward to play a role in the final outcome of the European Tour’s Race to Dubai.

This adjustment means that the tournament is now the penultimate action in the roster and attracts all the top guns vying to be the European Champion Golfer of the year. The total prize money on offer for the tournament is US $7 million with the winner taking home $1.17 million.

Gary Player, all of 81 years, will be the host for the tournament played on the course that bears his name. Sun City is always a demanding place for the players as it can be brutally hot.

The course which measures 7,831 yards plays into the hands of those players who can hit it long. The beauty of this course is offset by the challenge of staying calm as any wayward shot will be damaging to the prospects of the participants. The bush around each hole is dense and generally inhabited by baboons.

The course was opened in 1979 and has always been acknowledged as the country’s premier championship golf test. The course has been the home of the Nedbank Golf Challenge since 1981 and has always been very demanding on the players. The dramatic backdrop of the Pilanesberg Mountains coupled with the spectacular indigenous vegetation that flanks the fairways make this course a visual treat for everyone.

The field for this year is limited to 72 players and there are some great names vying for top honours. Some of the lead names include Thomas Pieters who was the rookie star for Europe at this year’s Ryder Cup. He can be backed to finish high up at the end of proceedings at odds of 20/1. Also in the fray is the Masters Champion Danny Willett who will be eager to mark his rise up the world rankings with another win in this event. He could be a contender to finish in the top 5 at odds of 45/1 to win.

Henrik Stenson, Chris Wood, Andy Sullivan and Rafa Cabrera-Bello are some of the other names that should be contenders in South Africa. From the home side, there are some strong names as well. Charl Schwartzel, George Coetzee, Louis Oosthuizen and Retief Goosen will be looking to keep the South African flag fluttering while players like Brandon Grace and Richard Sterne will look to make their own mark. Georg Coetzee played particularly well in Turkey last week to finish 5th.

The action for this week promises to be another close one with top golf action lying in wait for enthusiasts. So who we do like to win the Nedbank, Stenson looks good to take top honours but if you are looking at other bigger priced bets, look no further than Alex Noren (18/1). Keep an eye on the action which promises to be exciting and keep backing those winners.

Golf Tips For The Nedbank Golf Challenge

We were so tempted to put Stenson up for the win but the odds of 7/2 on offer from the bookies puts us off, so for our first tip we shall put up Alex Noren. A model of consistency this season he has attained three wins this year on the tour making seven in total. At 18/1 he does represent some value and we shall back him 2pts each way to win the Nedbank.

The Spaniard Rafael Cabrera Bello has been plying his trade in the States recently and has some decent form to his name. He is our final tip to win the Nedbank this week and finally get a much deserved win this season. With a string of top tens to his name including two runner up spots in the Omega Dubai Desert Classic and Commercial Bank Qatar Masters he is one to watch this week and for the final event in Dubai next week. Back him one point each way at odds of 30/1 with Coral.
