Newcastle play hosts to Swansea at St James Park on Saturday in the Premier League, as the home side desperately look for a vital win in their fight against relegation.

Newcastle are now six points away from safety with just six league games remaining this season. Last time out the Magpies suffered a 3-1 defeat at Southampton, as Shane Long, Graziano Pelle and Victor Wanyama all got on the scoresheet.

Andros Townsend got a goal back for the Magpies, but it was too little too late for the Magpies to pull anything back from the clash. Rafa Benitez’s teams only saving grace may be that they have a game in-hand on Norwich in 17th position.

Swansea now look safe from the spectre of relegation after a 1-0 home victory over reigning Premier League champions Chelsea, with Gylfi Sigurdsson scoring the only goal of the game.

The win over Chelsea moved the Swans up to 12th position in the Premier League table and onto the magic point’s total of 40. Sigurdsson has been in superb form of late, having scored four goals in his last five top-flight appearances for Francesco Guidolin’s team.

Facts And Figures

These two teams have met on nine occasions in the Premier League, with Swansea very much dominating the fixtures by recording six wins, while two games have been drawn and Newcastle have won just once.

It has been a similar story of woe for the Magpies in the four Premier League games at St James Park, as the Swans have recorded three wins and one game has been drawn.

Newcastle have won just one of the last ten meetings in all competitions and lost six out of the last seven games against the Welsh side.

Newcastle have not won in their last six Premier League games and have in fact lost five of those games.

Swansea have lost just one of their last six Premier League outings. However the Swans have a poor away record in the Premier League, having won just one of their last five games on their travels.

The Welsh side have scored two or more goals in four of their last six away games in the Premier League.

Team Selection And News

Newcastle are still contending with major injury problems. Goalkeepers Tim Krul and Rob Elliot remain sidelined through injury, as does full-back Massadio Haidara. The Magpies also have doubts over the fitness of Fabricio Coloccini, Steven Taylor and Daryl Janmaat, although the latter two are expected to recover in time to feature.

Swansea have a relatively clean bill of health for this clash, with only centre-back Jordi Amat and central midfielder Leon Britton the only doubts. The Swans may well name an unchanged starting line-up from last time out.

Possible Newcastle Team Selection

Darlow, Janmaat, Taylor, Mbemba, Dummett, Colback, Shelvey, Sissoko, Wijnaldum, Townsend, Mitrovic

Possible Swansea Team Selection

Fabianski, Rangel, Fernandez, Williams, Taylor, Cork, Fer, Ayew, Sigurdsson, Montero, Paloschi

Match Prediction

Newcastle have been poor for much of the campaign and atrocious of late, while Swansea’s form has improved immensely in recent weeks. I can see the Magpies just nicking a point from this clash and continue their struggles in the top-flight.
