Newcastle host Tottenham at St James Park on Sunday in the Premier League, as the visitors look to seal second place this season.

Newcastle were relegated on Wednesday night, after Sunderland defeated Everton 3-0 at the Stadium of Light. The Magpies hopes of staying up suffered a blow last time out drawing 0-0 at rock-bottom Aston Villa.

The highest the north east club can now finish this season is their current position of 18th place in the Premier League table.

Tottenham suddenly find themselves in a fight for second spot after suffering a 2-1 home defeat against Southampton last time out. Mauricio Pochettino’s side took the lead through Heung-Min Son in the first half, but a brace from Northern Ireland Steven Davis consigned Tottenham to defeat.

Spurs are now just two points ahead of arch-rivals Arsenal in the table, but the Gunners have a home game against rock-bottom Aston Villa in their final game of the campaign.

Facts And Figures

The 43 Premier League meetings between these two teams have been relatively even, as Newcastle have recorded 20 wins, Tottenham have won 17 times and six games have finished in draws.

The 21 Premier League meetings at St James have however favoured the home side, as the Magpies have recorded 11 wins, compared to five Spurs wins, while five games have also finished in draws.

There has been over 2.5 goals scored in each of the last five meetings between these two teams.

Newcastle are unbeaten in five Premier League games, recording two wins and three draws. The Magpies have also suffered just one defeat in their last eight home games in the Premier League.

There has been under 2.5 goals scored in three of Newcastle’s last four Premier League games.

Tottenham have lost just two of their Premier League away games this season. Mauricio Pochettino Pochettino’s side have also suffered just one defeat in their last nine top-flight games. The side from north London have scored two or more goals in six of their last eight away games in the Premier League.

Team Selection And News

The home side are without ‘keepers Tim Krul and Rob Elliot as well as full-back Massadio Haidara through injury, while captain Fabricio Coloccini is also a major doubt for the clash.

Midfielder Yoan Gouffran has hardly featured for the Magpies this season and is unlikely to feature in this clash. Rafa Benitez could select an unchanged team from last time out.

Tottenham are without central midfield duo Dele Alli and Mousa Dembele through suspension, while fellow midfielder Nabil Bentaleb is also expected to miss out through injury. Ryan Mason is likely to continue in central midfield.

Possible Newcastle Team Selection

Darlow, Anita, Mbemba, Lascelles, Dummett, Colback, Tiote, Townsend, Sissoko, Wijnaldum, Cisse

Possible Tottenham Team Selection

Lloris, Walker, Alderweireld, Vertonghen, Rose, Dier, Mason, Son, Eriksen, Lamela, Kane

Match Prediction

Newcastle’s confidence will be low following their midweek relegation from the top-flight and I believe that Tottenham will have too much quality for the Magpies.
