Northern Ireland v Germany Euro 2016 Group C Betting Preview

Northern Ireland and Germany clash in Group C at Euro 2016, with both teams looking to seal their qualification for the knockout stages.

Northern Ireland achieved their first ever European Championships victory last time out, but are heavy underdogs to win this clash at odds of 14/1 with Winner Sports.

Northern Ireland produced a solid performance last time out to defeat Ukraine 2-0. Gareth McAuley headed them into the lead just after the break, before Aberdeen winger Niall McGinn sealed the historic victory deep into stoppage-time

The win put Michael O’Neill’s side right back in the picture for qualification for the knockout stages of the competition. They now have three points, compared to Germany and Poland who both have four.

A draw in this clash could be enough to put them through to the knockout stages, while an unlikely would give them a chance of topping the group.

Germany were lacklustre last time out drawing with Poland, but are still heavy favourites to win this clash at odds of 3/10 with Ladbrokes.

The world champions produced a disappointing display last time out in a goalless draw against Poland. Joachim Low’s side failed to get a shot on target, which is the first time since the 1988 European Championship that that has happened to Die Mannschaft.

However, despite their struggle against Poland, Low’s side would still top the group if they better Poland result in their game with Ukraine. It seems unlikely that Germany will be eliminated given they have accrued four points already, but they will need to up their game for the rest of the competition.

Past Meetings

Germany’s record against Northern Ireland is a good one, as Die Mannschaft have won eight of their 14 games against the Irish, drawing four and losing just twice.

The most famous meetings came in qualifying for Euro 1984, as Northern Ireland recorded two 1-0 wins over West Germany. The only other competitive meeting between the two came in the 1958 World Cup group stage when they drew 2-2.

The latest meeting of the two nations came in a friendly back in 2005 with Germany recording a comfortable 4-1 victory.

Team and Selection News

Northern Ireland are likely to name an unchanged starting line-up for this clash from last time out, which means top scorer in qualifying Kyle Lafferty will have to be content with a place on the bench. Goal scoring hero from the Ukraine game Niall McGinn is also likely to miss out on a start.

Germany boss Joachim Low may make changes to his starting line-up from the lacklustre display from last time out. Striker Mario Gomez may come in up front with Mario Gotze dropping to the bench. Julian Draxler’s position could also be taken by Andre Schurrle.

Possible Northern Ireland team line-up:
McGovern, J. Evans, McAuley, Cathcart, Hughes, Dallas, Norwood, Davis, C. Evans, Ward, Washington

Possible Germany team line-up:
Neuer, Howedes, Boateng, Hummels, Hector, Khedira, Kroos, Muller, Ozil, Schurrle, Gomez

Betting Tip
Germany may have struggled to defeat Poland, but they will be determined to record a win and top this group. Northern Ireland put in a good display against Ukraine, but Germany are a different prospect and I believe the world champions will have too much for O’Neill’s side.
