Poland v Northern Ireland Euro 2016 Group C Preview

Poland and Northern Ireland face off in Group C of Euro 2016 on Sunday in Stade de Nice, as both teams look to begin their campaign with a crucial victory.

Poland made it through to the European Championships finals by finishing second to Germany in Group D of qualifying. A relatively strong showing in qualifying makes them favourites to win this clash at odds of 8/11 with Ladbrokes.

Poland were highly prolific in qualifying and were in fact top scorers with 33 goals from their ten qualifiers. Star striker Robert Lewandowski also finished as top scorer with 13 goals in his 10 qualifier appearances.

They finished the campaign having suffered just one defeat and trailed group winners Germany by just one point. Lewandowski and co will be keen to improve on the fact that they have never won a group game at the European Championships, having drawn three and lost three of their last six games at finals tournaments.

Northern Ireland were very much one of the surprise packages in qualifying and are odds of 5/1 with Coral to record a win in this clash.

Michael O’Neill’s team finished top of Group F in qualifying, finishing ahead of Romania and Hungary. Like Poland, they also suffered just one defeat in their qualification campaign and were the first fifth seed ever to qualify for a European Championships final.

Striker Kyle Lafferty played a big part in Northern Ireland’s qualification, scoring seven times in nine appearances in qualifying.

Past Meetings

These two teams have met on nine occasions, with Northern Ireland just having the edge over their counterparts, recording four wins, Poland winning three times and two games finishing in draws.

The pair first met in the European Championships back in 1962, when Northern Ireland won 2-0 both home and away. The two were again paired in the World Cup 2006 qualifiers, where Poland recorded a 3-1 and 1-0 wins on their way to qualification for the finals.

Once again they were drawn together in qualifiers for the 2010 World Cup. Northern Ireland won 3-2 at home and the reverse fixture finished in a 1-1 draw.

Team and Selection News

Poland head to France having experienced injury blows to winger Pawel Wszolek and full-back Maciej Rybus. Veteran Jakub Wawrzyniak will deputise for Rybus, while Bartosz Salamon and Michal Pazdan are competing for a place in the heart of the defence.

Northern Ireland have had a pretty set line-up in recent months. However, centre-back Craig Cathcart and top scorer in qualifying Kyle Lafferty picked-up knocks in a friendly against Slovakia, but both should recover in time to start this crucial opening match.

Possible Poland team line-up: Fabianski, Piszczek, Glik, Pazdan, Wawrzyniak, Blaszczykowski, Krychowiak, Zielinski, Grosicki, Milik, Lewandowski

Possible Northern Ireland team line-up: McGovern, McLaughlin, McAuley, Cathcart, Evans, Dallas, Davis, Baird, Norwood, Lafferty, Washington

Betting Tip
Poland will be highly confident of recording in this clash. Lewandowski and co were sharp in front of goal in qualifying and Northern Ireland kept just three clean sheets, so I would suggest go with a Poland win and goals to boot.
