Portugal may still be basking in the glory of winning Euro 2016 but this week it will be the arrival of golfing stars that will set the place ablaze. The Portugal Masters which has been a regular presence on the European golfing calendar since 2007 will be played from October 20th – 23rd.

This year’s edition will be special for the organisers too, as it will mark the tenth anniversary of the Masters. The impact of the tournament on Portugal has not just been on the golf course but much beyond. The larger economic success achieved around the tournament is a huge driving force too!

The tournament will be played on the Oceanico Victoria Golf course in Vilamoura. The course is designed by none other than the legendary Arnold Palmer and comes at a length of 7, 274 yards with a par-score of 72.

It is a complete golfing experience for the players with undulating fairways, cleverly placed bunker hazards and extensive water threats together with an exceptional driving range. This is all to be expected, as the course is a masterstroke coming from the legend himself!

For the players, one of the most difficult holes must be the one on fifth – which measures at 578 yards and has a par-score of five. It requires a long and accurate tee shot and even the entrance to the elevated green looks as if it is protected by the three frontal bunkers.

They also need to watch out for the complicated 12th hole which has twin threats – water on the left and a huge bunker on the right. Then of course is the most beautiful sight of two fairways separated by a water-line and a couple of waterfalls in the 14th Hole.

This year’s attraction is definitely going to be Ryder Cup star Thomas Pieters. The Belgian was breathtaking in picking up four points and becoming the most successful European Ryder Cup rookie in the process.

He will hope to continue his blistering form when he makes his fourth appearance at the Portugal Masters this year. Last year’s tournament saw him finish tied sixth but with a great surge in confidence, there is every chance that Pieters could eventually end up winning this week, or at least he will be in the top five – so keep your eye on him.

Pieters will be joined in the tournament by his Ryder Cup team mate Andy Sullivan who takes the field as the defending champion. The Englishman cruised all the way to the title romping home in a nine shot victory. Replicating the same form would be difficult but watch out for Sullivan who could be a good bet for a top five finish here.

The Portugal Masters over a period of time has become one of the most popular stops on the European Tour. Maybe it’s the appeal of playing on a perfectly manicured course designed by the legendary Arnold Palmer. May be it’s the proximity of the marina in Vilamoura and the array of bars and restaurants. May be it’s the presence of a five-star hotel on site. But one thing is for sure, the action will continue to be top notch.

Golf Tips For The Portugal Masters

Last weeks tips saw Alexander Levy finish in a T4 @50/1 so a little return for us there, but Tyrrell Hatton just missed out in T9. On to this weeks tips and it is hard to look past three of the top four in the betting for this event. With Alex Noren in superb form he has to be our first choice the performance he put in at The British Masters at the Grove to gain his third win of the season.

Joakim Lagergren has been knocking on the door for his first European Tour win. He came awfully close in the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship when finishing 4th to pick up his biggest cheque of over €213,000. He is the most likely outsider of the field to give his true game. So at odds of 66/1 with Coral he is to be backed at two points each way.

We have already mentioned the credentials of Thomas Pieters and he is our second tip for the Portugal Masters. We will also be backing him to win at odds of 8/1 with Ladbrokes. We are backing at three points to win.
