Venue

Congressional CC (Blue), Bethesda, MD • Purse: $6,900,000

Golfing action in the PGA resumes with the Quicken Loans National tournament set to be played from June 23rd – 26th at Washington D.C. The tournament which was earlier known as the AT & T National from 2007-13 has a total winning purse of US $ 6.9 million of which the winner takes home $ 1.24 million and 500 FedExCup points.

The first edition of the tournament was held in 2007 and is hosted by Tiger Woods and benefits the Tiger Woods foundation. The tournament will be played on the Congressional Country Club (Blue) course which has a rich history and tradition.

Established in 1924, the club has served as a host for many events that kept moving across courses. It witnessed three U.S. Opens along with the 1976 PGA Championship, six Kemper Opens apart from the AT & T National and the Quicken Loans National. Measuring 7, 569 yards with a par score of 71, the course is considered to be among the top 100 courses in the United States. The course was redesigned by Robert Trent Jones in 1957 and Rees Jones in 1989 and 2006.

Last year action saw Troy Merritt enter the tournament annals on the way to his first PGA Tour victory holding off Rickie Flower by a stroke. Tiger Woods, the tournament host, added to the spice by moving close to contention on the final day but three bogeys ended his chances in the end. It was played in August last year – a little later than the usual June slot, which is where it makes its presence this year.
This year’s roster sees a host of exceptional players adding glitz to the event. World number five Rickie Fowler will look to go one better than last year and along with Patrick Reed is one of the top players in the tournament.

The line-up for this year is very strong with 10 PGA Tour winners from this season including James Hahn (who won the Wells Fargo Championship) and Charley Hoffman (who won the Valero Texas Open). The field also consists of Ernie Els and Vijay Singh while amateur world number one Jon Rahm makes his professional debut.

Reed will look to end his tournament drought which dates back to 2015, although he has seven top-15 finishes this season. Former NCAA and U.S. Amateur Champions Bryson DeChambeau will be teeing-up for his seventh tournament as a professional.

The only disappointment for the spectators comes from the absence of Tiger Woods who will be restricted to host duties once again. He is yet to recover from back surgery and it marks the fourth time since 2007 that injuries have kept the crowd puller out of action.

The charm of Quicken Loans National has seen a galaxy of stars waiting to descend on the course. The strong field not only promises exciting action on all days, but the finish promises to be as close as it was last year. Will Fowler learn from the disappointments of 2015 and win the tournament? Or will there be another surprise winner?

Golf Tips For The Quicken Loans National

Rickie Fowler comes in to this weeks tournament as the highest ranked player at number six in the world. is he a worthy favourite we don’t think so. his form is extremely patchy and we prefer to look elsewhere for our tips. What of last weeks heroes at the US Open, Jim Furyk was highest placed with a T2 an excellent result considering he has missed a lot of golf this season with an injury. We still prefer to look elsewhere and go for our old mate Charley Hoffman, he can be generally had at 30/1 with most bookmakers. Already a winner (Valero Texas Open) this season in a field of this quality rates our top tip.

Top Tip

Ladbrokes

Charley Hoffman to win the Quicken Loans National 33/1 – 2pts each way

Our next best tip is Kevin Chappell is having an excellent season on the PGA Tour. Currently 10th in the FedEx standings he boasts some cracking form. With four top tens in his last ten events including a second place finish at The Players Championship he has to be included in our selections. He missed the cut at the US Open but that is a hit or miss event so do not read too much into that form. He is a decent bet at 40/1 with Coral bookmaker.

Next Best Tip

Coral Bookmakers

Kevin Chappell to win the Quicken Loans National 40/1 – 1pts each way

Jon Rahm showed why he has had a successful amateur career when making the cut at the US Open last week when a lot of world class golfers missed it. He can provide us with some great entertainment in his efforts to win the Quicken Loans National and at decent odds. It will prove to be a wise decision to back him early in his career on the PGA Tour as it won’t be long before he wins.
