Real Madrid v Atletico Madrid Champions League Final Betting Preview

This season’s Champions League final at the San Siro on Saturday sees Real Madrid face city rivals Atletico Madrid for the second time in three seasons. The two teams met in the final in 2014 with Los Blancos winning 4-1 in extra-time following a 1-1 draw in normal time.

Real Madrid heads into this clash after finishing second in La Liga this season. Los Blancos hit form late in the season and have suffered just one defeat in their last 13 Champions League outings.

Zinedine Zidane’s team have been particularly impressive in defence, having kept six clean sheets in their last seven games in Europe’s elite competition.

Their form under Zidane has been impressive, as the French legend has suffered just two defeats in his tenure as Real boss. However, one of those losses came at the hands of rivals Atletico at the Bernabeu.

Portuguese superstar Cristiano Ronaldo has scored 16 goals in the Champions League this season, which is the same number as the whole Atletico team combined in the competition.

Atletico Madrid have once again made the final of the Champions League against the odds under highly-rated boss Diego Simeone. The Argentinian has built his team around an impressive defensive record.

The Rojiblancos have kept six clean sheets in their last nine games in Europe’s elite competition, beating European giants Barcelona and Bayern Munich on the way to the final. A victory over their city rivals would complete a quite astounding treble.

French international striker Antoine Griezmann has been highly-influential for Atleti this season and has scored seven times in Europe’s elite competition. The former-Real Sociedad star could once again be Atletico’s main attacking threat.

Past meetings

These two teams have met just six times in European competition. These two teams first met in Europe in season 1958/59 in the European Cup. The two teams drew 2-2 on aggregate in the semi-finals and a replay saw Los Blancos record a 2-1 win courtesy of a Ferenc Puskas goal.

The next European meeting was in the 2014 final. Atletico looked to be heading for a 1-0 win after Diego Godin had scored for Simeone’s side, but deep into stoppage-time Real centre-back Sergio Ramos equalised to take the game into extra-time.

Los Blancos rallied in extra-time and strikes from Gareth Bale, Marcelo and Cristiano Ronaldo gave Real La Decima (their tenth European Cup).

In fact in season 2014/15 the two teams met at the quarter-finals stage of this competition, with Javier Hernandez scoring the only goal of the tie in the second leg at the Bernabeu.

Team Selection And News

Real Madrid are close to full strength for this clash, but French centre-back Raphael Varane will miss out through a thigh injury. Veteran centre-back Pepe will partner Real stalwart Sergio Ramos in the centre of defence.

Atletico boss Simeone has a fully-fit squad to choose from for this clash and is likely to choose the same starting line-up as last time out against Celta Vigo.

Possible Real Madrid starting line-up:

Navas, Carvajal, Ramos, Pepe, Marcelo, Modric, Casemiro, Kroos, Ronaldo, Benzema, Bale

Possible Atletico Madrid starting line-up:

Oblak, Juanfran, Godin, Gimenez, Luis, Saul, Fernandez, Gabi, Koke, Griezmann, Torres
