Republic of Ireland v Sweden Euro 2016 Group E Preview

Republic of Ireland and Sweden go head-to-head at the Stade De France on Monday in Group E of Euro 2016.

Republic of Ireland made it to the finals through a play-off and are slight underdogs to overcome the Swedes at odds of 12/5 with Stan James.

The Irish qualified for the finals through a play-off victory over Bosnia and Herzegovina, after they finished third in their qualification group behind Poland and Germany. In truth it was a tough group and a 1-0 victory over Germany in the penultimate fixture ensured Martin O’Neill’s side would at least finish third.

This clash could be make-or-break for the Irish with highly-rated Belgium to come in their next game, so a win could be crucial to their chances of making the knockout stages.

Sweden also needed to a play-off to get to the finals, but are favourites to overcome the Irish at 31/20 at Ladbrokes.

Erik Hamren’s side finished third in their qualification group behind Austria and Russia. The Scandinavian side made it through to the finals following a narrow play-off win over neighbours Denmark.

Despite Sweden’s seemingly difficult journey to the finals, star striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic shined, scoring 11 times in qualification, including three in the play-offs. Even at 35-years-old he still provides the attacking spark in a fairy average Sweden side.

Past Meetings

These two teams have met ten times in international action with Sweden recording five wins, Ireland winning three times and two games resulting in draws. However it is interesting to note that Ireland have failed to beat Sweden in six competitive matches, losing four and recording two draws.

The two teams last met in competitive action in the 2014 World Cup qualifiers, when one game finished goalless and Sweden recorded a 2-1. The previous competitive meetings between the two nations came back in qualifying for the European Championships in 1974.

The Scandinavians again had the better over the two games, recording a 1-0 win and the other game finishing 1-1.

Team and Selection News

The Republic of Ireland used a number of players during qualification and head to France without maverick attacking midfielder Alan Judge. In defence Andrew Keogh and Shane Duffy will be looking to force their way into the team at the heart of the defence.

Sweden have promoted a number of players from the under-21 team that won last year’s European Championships, including Viktor Lindelof, Oscar Hiljemark and Oscar Lewicki. However, once again for Sweden all eyes will be on charismatic star striker Ibrahimovic.

Possible Republic of Ireland team line-up: Randolph, Coleman, O’Shea, Clark, Brady, Hendrick, Whelan, McCarthy, Hoolahan, Walters, Long

Possible Sweden team line-up: Isaksson, Lustig, Granqvist, Lindelof, Olsson, Durmaz, Kallstrom, Ekdal, Forsberg, Berg, Ibrahimovic

Betting Tips
Neither of these teams were highly convincing in qualifying and there is not a massive gulf in quality between the two. However, in Ibrahimovic Sweden have a true match winner and the former-Barcelona striker could just swing this tight contest in the Swede’s favour.
