Romania v Switzerland Euro 2016 Group A Betting Preview

Two teams who made very different starts to their Euro 2016 campaign meet at the Parc des Princes on Wednesday, as Romania and Switzerland clash.

Romania (5/2 with Ladbrokes to win) came within minutes of claiming a very respectable draw against hosts France, but fell to a late 2-1 defeat in the tournaments opening game.

Following a goalless first half, Arsenal striker Olivier Giroud headed Les Bleus into the lead on 57 minutes. However, despite France dominating possession, Anghel Iordanescu’s side equalised eight minutes later.

Patrice Evra brought down Nicolae Stanciu and Bogdan Stancu found the net with the resulting penalty kick. Just as it looked like the game would finish in a draw, West Ham midfielder Dimitri Payet fired home a fantastic long-range effort with just a minute left on the clock.

Romania will be disappointed by the result, but take positives from the performance. One positive is the fact that they have now suffered just two defeats in 21 international outings.

Switzerland (7/5 with Unibet to win) kicked-off their Euro 2016 campaign with a 1-0 win over 10-man Albania. The Swiss took just five minutes to take the lead as centre-back Fabian Schar headed home, before Albania captain Lorik Cana was dismissed for a second bookable offence on 37 minutes.

Despite having a man advantage Switzerland failed to add to their winning margin, but the most important thing was the win, as it put Vladimir Petkovic’s team level on points with hosts France in Group A.

Past Meetings

These two teams have met on 12 previous occasions, with each team winning five games apiece and two games finishing in draws.

Romania ruined Switzerland chances of making Euro 1992 by beating the Swiss 1-0 in qualifying in Bucharest. The two were drawn together in the group stages of World Cup 1994.

Switzerland under a certain Roy Hodgson won 4-1, but Romania under current boss Anghel Iordanescu topped the group and made it to the quarter-finals of the competition, with the Swiss losing in the round of 16.

Team News

Romania produced a spirited display last time out against France and boss Iordanescu may name an unchanged starting line-up. Full-back Steliano Filip missed out last time out and is once again doubtful for the clash.

Switzerland boss Petkovic may shuffle his pack for this clash. Gelson Fernandes, Breel Embolo and Fabian Frei all came off the bench last time out, but all three will be hoping to be included in the starting line-up for this clash.

Possible Romania team line-up:
Tatarusanu, Sapunaru, Chiriches, Grigore, Rat, Stanciu, Hoban, Pintilii, Popa, Andone, Stancu

Possible Switzerland team line-up:
Sommer, Lichtsteiner, Schar, Djourou, Rodriguez, Behrami, Xhaka, Shaqiri, Dzemaili, Embolo, Seferovic

Betting tip for Romania v Switzerland
This game is vital for Romania, as a defeat would damage their chances of making the last 16 of the competition. Switzerland were not overly-impressive against ten-man Albania, but will still be confident of a victory. I cannot see this being a highly-scoring game and believe that this could well finish in a draw.
