Russia v Slovakia Euro 2016 Group B Preview

Russia and Slovakia go head-to-head on Wednesday in Group B of Euro 2016 in a game that could be pivotal to both teams.

Russia slight favourites at 7/5 with Corals recorded a highly fortunate 1-1 draw with England in their group opener. Roy Hodgson’s side had the better of the game in Marseille and took the lead through an Eric Dier free-kick with less than 20 minutes left on the clock.

Despite offering very little attacking threat, Russia equalised in stoppage-time, as centre-back Vasili Berezutski looped a header over Joe Hart. The draw was not a terrible result considering the pattern of the game.

The point keeps Russia well in contention to make the knockout stages, but they cannot afford any slip-ups in this clash.

Slovakia who can be backed for this game at 5/2 with Ladbrokes opened their campaign with a disappointing 2-1 defeat against Wales on Saturday. Wales had the better of the first half, after Marek Hamsik saw an effort cleared off the line just a few minutes in.

The Dragons took the lead on ten minutes, as their star player Gareth Bale scored with a free-kick from the edge of the area. Slovakia got back into the game in the second half and equalised just after the hour mark through substitute Ondrej Duda.

However, Wales won the game with less than ten minutes left, as Reading forward Hal Robson-Kanu scored the winning goal to secure victory for Chris Coleman’s side.

The defeat means that a victory in this clash will be vital, as a defeat in this game would likely see the Slovaks exit the competition at the group stage.

Past Meetings

Games between these two teams have been very even. The two teams drew both games in qualifying for World Cup 2006. The pair was once again drawn together in qualifying for Euro 2012, with both teams claiming wins in the away games.

The latest meeting of the two teams came in a friendly game in 2014, which Russia won 1-0 in St Petersburg.

Team and Selection News

Russia have a doubt over the fitness of midfielder Denis Glushakov, although the Spartak Moscow midfielder came off the bench against England. Youngster Alexander Golovin may continue alongside Roman Neustadter in the centre of midfield.

For Slovakia first choice left-back Tomas Hubocan could come back into the team in place of Dusan Svento. Goalscorer Ondrej Duda will be hoping to start this game, while winger Miroslav Stoch and striker Adam Nemec also have a chance of making the starting line-up.

Possible Russia team line-up:
Akinfeev, Smolnikov, Berezutski, Ignashevich, Schennikov, Neustadter, Golovin, Kokorin, Shatov, Smolov, Dzyuba

Possible Slovakia team line-up:
Kozacik, Pekarik, Skrtel, Durica, Hubocan, Kucka, Duda, Mak, Hamsik, Weiss, Nemec

Betting Tip
Russia looked very limited and looked like they lacked attacking ideas against England. Leonid Slutskiy’s side will be hoping to pose more of an attacking threat in this clash. Slovakia will be disappointed to have lost against Wales and I expected playmaker Marek Hamsik to help them record a victory in this clash.
