This week the PGA Tour focus will shift to Jackson, Mississippi for the Sanderson Farms Championship that has been part of the PGA Tour schedule since 1968.

The tournament was originally played at the Hattiesburg Country Club before moving to Madison in 1994.

The tournament then found its home in Jackson early in the 2015 season. It will be played at the Country Club of Jackson this year, which has a rich heritage having come into existence more than 100 years ago in 1914. At 7,421 yards and a par-score of 72, the Dick Wilson layout which is into its third year as a host goes by the design by John Fought in 2008.

The field for this year is headlined by Ian Poulter, who is on the comeback trail after being out of action for five months with through injury. Poulter will have esteemed company in the form of defending champion Peter Malnati and runner-up David Toms.

With the top 50 players having qualified for the WGC-HSBC Champions tournament, Chris Kirk at a rank of 74 is the highest-ranked player in the field for this tournament.

But make no mistake, the field is highly competitive and boasts six former major champions including Toms, Angel Cabrera, David Duval, Retief Goosen, Geoff Ogilvy and Lucas Glover.

Adding interest to the field is the presence of 45 of the top-50 graduates from the Tour. The tournament is also a momentous one for Dicky Pride who is set for his 18th start in Mississippi, tying Glen Day among the active players for that record.

Last year’s action saw Malnati stand tall in a long Monday finish to rise above a crowded leaderboard and pick up his first PGA Tour victory. He was one shot off the lead by the time the final round started but picked up five birdies in his last 12 holes to finish one stroke ahead of David Toms.

The tournament has a unique history of being a prime contender for first-time winners. Three in the past five years and nine overall winners at Mississippi have been first-time winners – so a repeat could be on the cards. Backing another first-time winner this year may be worth a punt. All eyes will be on Poulter as he looks to get back into the swing of things. Back him to be close to the top-20 although a dash to the top is virtually ruled out.

Americans have been regular winners in the past here with 19 of the past 21 tournaments in Mississippi being won by American’s. Backing another American to do so this week would not be a terrible bet in this one.

Just two men have captured the Sanderson Farms tournament more than once – Brian Henninger and Fred Funk. So, backing Malnati to retain the crown is unlikely to pay off.

Though most of the top players are fighting it out for top honours at the WGC-HSBC tournament, there is still a lot to look forward to at the Sanderson Farms Championship at Mississippi. A great week of action lies ahead!

Golf Tips For The Sandersons Farms Championship

The Sandersons Farm Championship is a chance for the up and coming golfers from the to get there season off to a flyer. With that in mind we look at the graduates from that tour. We start with Grayson Murray, he may of missed the cut at the Safeway Open but as that was his first start on the PGA Tour since 2013 we can forgive him. He had an excellent record last season on the Tour winning once with 8 top 10’s from 17 starts. He represents the value at odds of 33/1 with Paddypower and should be backed at 1.5 points each way.

A player that did well last week at the CIMB was Ian Poulter, back from injury he passed his first test with flying colours he could well be a player to watch this year we certainly will be. Because of the result last week he is near the top of the betting market, but that does not scare us off. Back Poulter to win the Sandersons 2 points each way at odds of 28/1 also with Paddypower.

So our last tip as usual we go for a bit of value and D A Points fits the bill this week. Points was in fine form for the finals series and has been an early season winner before albeit a few seasons ago. He is overpriced at 150/1 with Paddypowers who go six places for this tournament. 1.5 points each way on D A Points. Remember D A Points was a huge winner for us when winning the Shell Houston Open back in 2013 at odds of 999/1 on Betfair Exchange. Was it that long ago!!!
