Carnoustie, Angus, United Kingdom – Scotland • Purse: £1,350,000

It may not be easy to rewind the clock but Seniors Golf gives a chance to partially accomplish that task. The Senior Open Championship presented by Rolex which will tee off this week at Carnoustie will feature 144 of the world’s finest over-50s golfers.

The 30th edition of this prestigious tournament gives a chance to everyone to bask in the beautiful game of these great golfers once again. Coming on the heels of the incredible action at the Royal Troon on the west coast of Scotland, it’s time for the east coast to bask in the glory.

Carnoustie will host the tournament for the first time since 2010 and at 7, 295 yards it is the longest course on the 2016 European Senior Tour schedule. At 50 yards longer than the L’Albatros Course at Le Golf National which hosted the Paris Legends Championship, Carnoustie will test the mettle of the senior pros.

The course roots takes one back to 1839 and has a pedigree of playing host to seven Open Championship and one Senior Open Championship. The back-nine is considered to be very tricky for the Senior Championship including the renowned 235-yard par-3 16th Hole. The infamous Barry Burn river which has already got the better of many players and will be at its notorious best on the 18th Hole.

The Senior Open Championship has a rich legacy producing 20 different winners in its 29-year history. Gary Player and Tom Watson are the most successful winners claiming the title three times each. With a total prize kitty of $ 2.68 million and recognition in both PGA Tour Champions and the European Seniors Tour, there isn’t any shortage of motivation.

Last year’s action saw American Marco Dawson storm to his first ever Senior Major Championship at the Sunningdale Golf Club by pipping the German Bernhard Langer by one shot. Dawson was level with Colin Montgomerie going into the final round and held his nerve to win the title despite falling back by three shots at one stage.

The field for this year will leave everyone awestruck as Carnoustie will welcome a glut of golfing talent. 27 Major and Senior Major champions with 64 wins between themselves make up the roster this week making this one of the most accomplished list of all time. There are five players who have won both a Major and a Senior Major in action – Bernhard Langer, Tom Lehman, Mark O’Meara, Craig Stadler and Tom Watson.
Of the players to watch out, Jean Van de Velde will make his Senior Open debut and so will the 1995 Open Champion John Daly and the 2004 Open champion Todd Hamilton. Langer will expect to rise from the disappointment of last year and is the bookies favourite to clinch the title – odds of 4/1 with Winner.

Miguel Angel Jimenez is a huge crowd puller wherever he goes and odds of 11/2 with Ladbrokes make him a strong contender. Watch out for the evergreen Montgomerie who at odds of 8/1 with Ladbrokes is an exciting option.

Golf Tips For The Senior Open Championship

Bernhard Langer just continues to dominate the Champions tour and with two Senior Open Championships to his name already can not be opposed. He has tasted victory in this tournament the last time it was held at Carnoustie on 2010. He tops the betting odds table with all bookmakers but still warrants our maximum bet. Langer has three wins already on the Champions Tour from eleven starts, which sees him top the Charles Schwab Cup from Billy Andrade. He will be very hard to beat and is worthy of a 6pt win.

For our second tip we go for Colin Montgomerie, whose exploits last week at The Open saw him make the cut in what will probably be his last Open at Royal Troon at least. Making the cut was no mean feat as weather conditions proved troublesome to many of the top players in the world. Back in calmer waters, we can see Monty challenging Langer for the title. Monty has gone close twice since moving on to the Champions Tour and this three time Senior Major winner will be desperate to get his hands on this trophy in his home country. Yet to record a win this season he did come close to another major when finishing second in the Senior PGA Championship. He represents the value from the other likely contender Miguel Angel Jimenez and should be backed at 4pt win.
