TPC Summerlin, Las Vegas, NV • Purse: $6,600,000

The Shriners Hospitals for Children Open is a historic golf tournament on the PGA Tour that is played in Nevada. With its roots 33-years back in 1983, it is the fourth event of the 2016/17 PGA Tour season.

The tournament has gone by various titles and was originally played over five rounds over several courses in the desert. It was from 2007 that the Shriners Hospitals for Children would take over the operations of the tournament and with that they changed the name of the tournament.

This years event will be played on the TPC Summerlin course. At 7,255 yards and a par-score of 71, it is in its 25th year as a PGA Tour venue. The course was a 1991 collaboration between Bobby Weed and two-time Major Champion Fuzzy Zoeller. It was carved from the rugged Nevada desert to join what was then a three-course rotation.

From 2008, it became the sole venue as part of the tournaments restructuring. The course meanders through arroyos and canyons that lead to a four-hole closing stretch. The winner this week will take home 500 fedEx Cup points and a winners cheque for $1,188,000. The total prize fund amounts to US$ 6.6 million.

This year’s tournament will see a host of big names, even though it clashes with the Turkish Airlines Open. The roster will be led by PGA Championship title-holder Jimmy Walker.
The American will be joined by his U.S. Ryder Cup teammates Brooks Koepka, J.B. Holmes and Ryan Moore. In total, this year’s tournament will feature six of the top 36 in the current world rankings. Koepka who had an excellent Ryder Cup is sure to feature high up on everyones list of likely winner.

The tournament will also see the winning Ryder Cup captain Davis Love III making his first start since being elected to the World Golf Hall of Fame.
Also keep an eye on the current Hall of Famers Ernie Els and Vijay Singh as they look to roll back the years and look for a much needed win. Wesley Bryan, a three-time winner on the Tour last year will also be in the fray making his second start of his PGA Tour rookie season. He is one to follow this year as winning comes naturally.

Last year’s tournament saw Smylie Kaufman storm from being seven shots off the pace to an unexpected win on the final day. He also marked the 10th time that the tournament ended with a first-time winner in Las Vegas in a 14-year span.

Recent trends show that this could continue – so back the odds for a first timer to emerge victorious here.
Former Champion Ryan Moore will hope to keep the trophy in town – keep an eye on him ending victorious. Kaufman will try to defend his title and become only the second man to claim back-to-back titles in Las Vegas which was accomplished last by Jim Furyk in 1998 and ’99. Who are you backing to emerge victorious this week?
