Slovakia v England Euro 2016 Group B Preview

Slovakia and England meet in Group B of Euro 2016 on Monday night, as both teams look for a victory that would confirm their place in the knockout stages of the competition.

Slovakia put themselves back in contention to win the group by beating Russia last out, but are underdogs to win this clash at odds of 5/1 with Betfair.

Slovakia recorded a 2-1 win over Russia last time out with Vladimir Weiss and Marek Hamsik scoring first half goals. The Russians got a late consolation goal through substitute Denis Glushakov. Despite mounting a late charge for an equaliser Slovakia survived.

A win or a draw could see Slovakia through to the knockout stages, depending on what happens in the other games in the group and other groups.

England recorded a late win over Wales last time out and makes the Three Lions favourites to win this game at odds of 4/5 with Ladbrokes.

Roy Hodgson’s side recorded a 2-1 last-gasp victory over neighbours Wales. England had the better of the first half, but it was Wales who took the lead just before half-time. Real Madrid star Gareth Bale had scored with a free-kick in the first game and repeated the trick this time from 35 yards out.

England lacked a cutting edge in the first half, but the introduction of forwards Jamie Vardy and Daniel Sturridge changed that. Vardy equalised on 56 minutes from close-range and after sustained pressure Sturridge poked home the winner in stoppage-time.

The victory means that a just like Slovakia, a draw or a win would be enough to take them through. A draw could even be enough to win the group, depending on the result in the other game.

Past Meetings

These two nations have met just three times, with England recording wins on all three occasions. The two teams first met in qualifying for Euro 2004, with the Three Lions recording two 2-1 wins in Bratislava and Middlesbrough.

The next time the two nations met was in a friendly in 2009, as England recorded a 4-0 win at Wembley with current captain Wayne Rooney scoring a brace.

Team and Selection News

Slovakia have a fully-fit squad to choose from for this clash, so boss Jan Kozak may choose to select an unchanged starting line-up from last time out.

England also have a fully-fit squad. Sturridge and Jamie Vardy could well come into the starting line-up in place of the ineffective Harry Kane and Raheem Sterling.

Possible Slovakia team line-up:
Kozacik, Pekarik, Skrtel, Durica, Hubocan, Kucka, Pecosky, Mak, Hamsik, Weiss, Duda

Possible England team line-up:
Hart, Walker, Cahill, Smalling, Rose, Dier, Alli, Rooney, Vardy, Sturridge, Lallana

Betting Tip
A draw could be good enough for both teams to qualify, but both will want to win the group. Slovakia looked more dangerous against Russia, with Marek Hamsik. However if England play the way they did in the second half against Wales they should record a crucial victory.
