Southampton entertain Sunderland at the St Marys Stadium on Saturday in the Premier League, as both back teams look to get back to winning ways.

Southampton suffered a 2-0 defeat at south coast rivals Bournemouth last time out, which means the Saints have now suffered consecutive defeats in the Premier League following a good run of form in the top-flight.

Ronald Koeman’s side are now ninth in the table, but are seven points off the top-four. With games running out though a top-six finish may be a more realistic aim this season.

Sunderland drew 2-2 with Crystal Palace last time out in the Premier League at the Stadium of Light. The Black Cats took the lead in the first half through a goal from Dame N’Doye, before ex-Sunderland Connor Wickham grabbed a double.

However, Sam Allardyce’s team rescued a point through a last-gasp strike from Italian striker Fabio Borini. The draw moved the Black Cats up to 17th place in the table and out of the relegation zone on goal difference.

With Southampton in inconsistent form the Black Cats will be looking at this as a winnable game in their fight for survival.

Team Selection And News

Southampton are without striker Charlie Austin through injury, while Kenyan international midfielder Victor Wanyama is still suspended. Centre-back Florin Gardos and striker Jay Rodriguez have both returned to training after injury, but seem unlikely to feature.

Republic of Ireland international Shane Long is doubtful. The Saints may choose to switch back to playing with four at the back.

Sunderland could be without striker Duncan Watmore and midfielder Lee Cattermole. The Black Cats also have minor doubts over defenders Jan Kirchhoff and John O’Shea, as well as midfielder Jeremain Lens.

Possible Southampton Team Selection

Forster, Cedric, Fonte, Van Dijk, Bertrand, Romeu, Davis, Mane, Tadic, Ward-Prowse, Pelle

Possible Sunderland Team Selection

Mannone, Yedlin, O’Shea, Kone, Van Aanholt, Kirchhoff, Rodwell, M’Vila, N’Doye, Khazri, Defoe

Match Prediction

Southampton have put in two very poor performances in in their two top-flight games, but this game represents a chance to get back to winning ways. Sunderland have been playing badly in recent games, but I think the home side may just have a bit more too much quality for the Black Cats.
