Spain v Turkey Euro 2016 Group D Betting Preview

European champions Spain face Turkey on Friday in Group D, as La Roja looks to seal their place in the knockout stages of the competition.

Vicente del Bosque’s side needed a last-gasp winner to beat Czech Republic 1-0 in their opening game, but are still firm favourites at odds of 4/9 with William Hill to win this clash.

Spain dominated the opener against the Czech’s, but needed a header in the 87th minute from Gerard Pique to finally take the lead. La Roja dominated for much of the game, as the Czech’s attempted to contain their intelligent passing and movement.

The game proved that maybe the Spanish are a striker light, with Juventus striker Alvaro Morata enduring a frustrating game.

Turkey opened their account with a defeat against Croatia and are underdogs in this clash at odds 9/1 with Betfair to put off a shock in this clash.

Turkey suffered a 1-0 defeat in their opening game against Turkey, with Real Madrid playmaker Luka Modric scoring a sublime long-range volley on 41 minutes to seal the victory for Ante Cacic’s side. The score line did not illustrate Croatia’s dominance, as they hit the woodwork twice.

Fatih Terim’s side know that they will need to pick-up a positive result against all odds in this game if they are to have any chance of making it to the knockout stages.

Past Meetings

Spain have faced Turkey on ten occasions, recording five wins and four draws, with the Turkish claiming just one win in the process. The two have faced each other seven times in competitive action, Spain winning four times, two games ending in draws and Turkey picking up that solitary victory.

The most recent meetings between the two nations came in qualifying for World 2010. La Roja won 1-0 at home and 2-1 in Istanbul in the reverse fixture. Barcelona defender Gerard Pique scored his first goal at international level in the home win.

Turkey’s one win over Spain came in a 1-0 victory in qualifying for the 1954 World Cup.

Team and Selection News

Spain boss Vicente Del Bosque may decide to shuffle his pack for this game. Striker Alvaro Morata was ineffective against Czech Republic and may be replaced by prolific Athletic Bilbao striker Aritz Aduriz.

Turkey boss Terim has a few selection headaches ahead of this clash. Defender Gokhan Gonul and midfielder Mehmet Topal are both doubtful, having started the game against Croatia. The likes of Semih Kaya and Ahmet Calik could come in if the pair fails to recover.

Possible Spain team line-up:
De Gea, Juanfran, Ramos, Pique, Alba, Fabregas, Busquets, Iniesta, Nolito, Silva, Aduriz

Possible Turkey team line-up:
Babacan, Erkin, Balta, Calik, Kaya, Inan, Turan, Ozyakup, Tufan, Calhanoglu, Tosun

Betting Tip
Spain were not at their best against Czech Republic last time out and Turkey were poor in their defeat against a very dangerous Croatia side. However, Vicente del Bosque’s side have far more quality than Turkey and should record a comfortable win over Terim’s team.
