Stoke City v Liverpool Preview

Stoke City open their Premier League campaign with a home game against Liverpool on Sunday afternoon.
The Potters finished a respectable ninth position in the Premier League table last season, despite looking like relegation candidates prior to Christmas. Mark Hughes’ side found form in the second half of the campaign to clinch a top-half finish.
Hughes has been busy in the transfer market this summer. Glen Johnson, Ibrahim Afellay, Joselu Marco van Ginkel, Jakob Haugaard and Shay Given have joined the Potters, as well as Spanish youngsters Moha and Sergio Molina. Last season’s loan star Philipp Wollscheid has joined on a permanent basis.
Mark Hughes side have endured a disappointing pre-season campaign, losing against Brentford, FC Cologne and FC Porto. Their sole pre-season victory came against Welsh side Wrexham in their first friendly of the closed season.
Liverpool will be hoping to avoid another nightmare day at the Britannia Stadium, after they suffered a 6-1 humiliation at the hands of Stoke in the last game of last season.
The Reds were disappointing last season and finished sixth in the Premier League table. The summer departures of Steven Gerrard and Raheem Sterling have been compensated by Brendan Rodgers spending big to reinforce his squad.
The Reds have brought in Nathaniel Clyne, Christian Benteke, Roberto Firmino, Joe Gomez, Danny Ings, James Milner and Adam Bogdan this summer.
The Merseysider’s have been in impressive form in pre-season winning five out of their six games, beating Thailand All Stars, Brisbane Roar, Adelaide United, HJK and Swindon. The only blip coming in a goalless draw against a Malaysia Select Xl.

Facts And Figures

The Premier League head-to-head record between these two teams is pretty equal, with Liverpool having claimed five wins, Stoke winning on four occasions and five games ending in a draw.
However, of the seven games played at Stoke, the Potters have won four, there has been two draws and Liverpool have won just once.
Liverpool have not won in their five away games in the Premier League either and will be hoping for their fortunes to improve at one of their bogey grounds.
The Reds do have the edge in the recent fixtures though, as the Merseysider’s have won three out of the last four games between the two teams.

Team News

Stoke have injury doubts over Ryan Shawcross, Marko Arnuatovic and Marc Wilson. Spanish forward Bojan is back in training after a long-term injury, but is unlikely to figure due to a lack of match fitness. The likes of Marco van Ginkel, Ibrahim Afellay and Glen Johnson may make their debuts, while Joselu will also look to feature in this clash.
Liverpool also have a few injury problems heading into this game as Jon Flanagan and Daniel Sturridge are long-term injury casualties, while the Reds also have a doubt over the fitness of Joe Allen.
Christian Benteke, James Milner, Nathaniel Clyne and Roberto Firmino all look set to make their Reds competitive debuts.

Possible Stoke City line-up: Butland, Johnson, Wollscheid, Muniesa, Pieters, Sidwell, Van Ginkel, Arnautovic, Ireland, Afellay, Diouf

Possible Liverpool line-up: Mignolet, Clyne, Skrtel, Sakho, Moreno, Milner, Henderson, Ibe, Firmino, Coutinho, Benteke

The Britannia Stadium has been a bogey ground for Liverpool in the past, but the Reds look to have made some good signings and I think the two teams may just cancel each other out. The bet I would go for is a score draw in this one.

Our Big Match Tip
