Stoke City host Southampton at the Britannia Stadium on Saturday in the Premier League, as both teams look to push up the table towards the top six.

Stoke’s form has improved in recent weeks, as the Potters are now four games unbeaten in the Premier League following a 1-1 draw at Chelsea last time out. Bertrand Traore opened the scoring for the Blues, before Stoke’s Senegalese striker Biram Mame Diouf struck an equaliser for the Potters with just five minutes left on the clock.

Mark Hughes sides upturn in recent fortunes has seen them move up to eighth in the Premier league table and they are now just four points off sixth-place Manchester United.

Southampton have failed to win any of their last three Premier League games, suffering two defeats and drawing 1-1 with relegation-threatened Sunderland last time out. The Saints Portuguese centre-back Jose Fonte was dismissed with just ten minutes left.

The Black Cats looked like they had won the game with just five minutes left, as Jermain Defoe struck the opening goal of the game. However the Saints rescued a point deep into stoppage-time, as centre-back Virgil van Dijk struck for the south coast side.

The draw leaves Southampton ninth in the Premier League table, one place and two points below their opponents. Ronald Koeman’s side looked to be set to challenge for a European place after a good run of form.

Facts And Figures

These two teams have only met seven times in the Premier League. Four games have finished in draws, while Stoke have recorded two wins and Southampton just one win.

The three Premier League meetings at the Britannia Stadium have seen two draws and one Stoke victory.

Stoke have won the last two meetings between these two sides, after previously failing to win any of the previous six in all competitions.

There have been under 2.5 goals scored in Southampton’s last five away games in the Premier League.

Team Selection And News

The home side have a number of injury problems heading into this midtable clash. Defensive trio Glen Johnson, Marc Wilson and Phil Bardsley all look set to miss out through injury, while captain Ryan Shawcross and central midfielder Charlie Adam are both doubts for the clash.

Stoke boss Mark Hughes may decide to choose an unchanged starting line-up from the draw at Chelsea.

Southampton also have a number of injury absentees for this clash. Striker Charlie Austin is ruled out through injury, while Shane Long and Jay Rodriguez both look unlikely to feature. The Saints are without centre-back Jose Fonte and midfielder Victor Wanyama through suspension.

Possible Stoke City Team Selection

Butland, Cameron, Wollscheid, Muniesa, Pieters, Imbula, Whelan, Shaqiri, Afellay, Arnautovic, Diouf

Possible Southampton Team Selection

Forster, Martina, Van Dijk, Yoshida, Bertrand, Clasie, Romeu, Davis, Mane, Tadic, Pelle

Match Prediction

These two teams form has been contrasting in recent weeks with Stoke’s form improving and Southampton going through a poor run of form. I can see the Potters recording a win in this clash, although the draw cannot be written-off.
