Kick Off – 12.45pm Saturday 16th January 2016 – Live on BT Sport 1

Tottenham host Sunderland at White Hart Lane on Saturday in the Premier League early kick-off, with the two teams heading into this encounter in very different moods.
Tottenham head into this clash on the back of a 1-0 home defeat against top-four rivals Leicester City on Wednesday night. Former-Chelsea centre-back Robert Huth scored the only goal of the game to give the Foxes a crucial victory.
Spurs remain in fourth spot in the Premier League table, but are now seven points behind league leaders and arch-rivals Arsenal and also four points behind third-place Manchester City.
Mauricio Pochettino’s side are also now just one point clear of fifth-place West Ham in the race for the Champions League spots.
Sunderland has now secured consecutive Premier League victories, as the Black Cats recorded a 4-2 win at Swansea on Wednesday night. Jermain Defoe scored a hat-trick and full-back Patrick van Aanholt also got on the scoresheet. The pair also scored in the Black Cats last win over Villa.
Defoe has scored five goals in his last two Premier League outings and has nine top-flight goals for the campaign. Sunderland are now 18th in the Premier League, just a point behind 17th place Swansea.

Facts And Figures

Tottenham have dominated the 29 Premier League meetings between these two teams, recording 19 victories. Sunderland has won five times and there has also been five draws.
The north London side have also won 12 of the 14 Premier League matches at White Hart Lane, with the Blacks Cats claiming a solitary win and one game being drawn.
Sunderland has failed to win any of the last ten meetings in all competitions. In fact Spurs have won eight of those ten meetings.
There have been over 2.5 goals scored in Sunderland’s last four top-flight away games.

Team Selection & News

Tottenham continue to be without Cameroonian international forward Clinton N’Jie. Elsewhere they have doubts over the fitness of midfield trio Alex Pritchard, Mousa Dembele and Ryan Mason.
Mauricio Pochettino may choose to name an unchanged team, despite defeat last time out, although Heung-Min Son may start instead of Tom Carroll in midfield, with Dele Alli dropping into a deeper role.
The visitors have injury problems in defence, with Younes Kaboul and Adam Matthews both definitely ruled out of this clash. John O’Shea is also a doubt along with midfielders Jack Rodwell and Sebastian Larsson.

Possible Tottenham team line-up: Lloris, Walker, Alderweireld, Vertonghen, Davies, Dier, Alli, Son, Eriksen, Lamela, Kanet

Possible Sunderland team line-up: Mannone, Jones, Coates, Brown, Van Aanholt, M’Vila, Cattermole, Johnson, Lens, Borini, Defoe

Tottenham v Sunderland Match Prediction

Even after recent results I cannot look past a Tottenham win in this one, but I highly doubt that it will be a comfortable afternoon for Spurs. Former-Tottenham striker Defoe is in hot form and could cause his old club problems in defence.
However, the Spurs players will be desperate to bounce back from that disappointing defeat last time out and should just about record a narrow victory in this one.
