East Lake GC, Atlanta, GA • Purse: $8,500,000

As we near the end of the season and players calculate their place in the race of points, the Tour Championship tees off setting the tone for the FedEx Cup winner. With the field consisting exclusively of the top 30 money leaders of the season, the action at the Tour Championship has always been one of the most exciting events. These 30 players will battle it out to FedEx Cup champion and pick up a cool $10,000,000 bonus.

The tournament debuted in 1987 and was initially played as the final event of the season but since 2007, it has been the final event of the four-tournament FedEx Cup playoff. The 2016 edition will be played from September 22nd to 25th with a total winning purse of US $8.5million. The winner pockets 2,000 FedEx Cup points along with a share of $1.53 million.

The event was played at various courses till 1996. Beginning in 1997, the event alternated between Champions Golf Club in Houston and East Lake Golf Club in Atlanta. The latter has become the permanent home for the tournament since 2004.

The course measures 7,385 yards and has a par-score of 70. The course was built in 1908 and was originally designed by Tom Bendelow. The revamp was undertaken by Donald Ross in 1913 following which the East Lake hosted some of the most prestigious tournaments on the golfing calendar.

This year’s roster of 30 players is headed by the FedEx Cup leader Dustin Johnson who has won at BMW Championship most recently. His third win of the season should make him one of the players to watch out for this weekend. If you want a safe bet, then bet on Johnson to finish in the top four at this event.

Giving him tough fight will be Patrick Reed who is the man in form coming into the Tour Championship. He has a poor record at the East Lake but back him to be one of the top players this weekend.

Defending Champion Jordan Spieth hasn’t had a great season struggling to recapture the heights of last year. But there is something about his record in Georgia that says he could be lurking around the top five.

Phil Mickelson will be making his 18th Tour Championship start making him the player with most appearances. Interestingly, the tournament boasts the presence of eight US Ryder Cup players who will take on Europe later this month. In Rory McIlroy, the European team has only one representative teeing off at the East Lake.

Johnson, Reed, Adam Scott and Paul Casey are in the top five and have a great chance of winning the points title by just winning at the East Lake. Excitingly, every player of the top 30 has a mathematical chance of claiming the point’s crown – subject to some complex calculations. Each of the last six FedEx Cup Champions have done so after winning the Tour Championship. Will the trend continue this year? Or will we see a first non-East Lake winner after Tiger Woods in 2009 clinch the FedEx Cup? Well…answers are just around the corner!

Golf Tips For The Tour Championship

Patrick Reed sits second in the rankings and only needs a win to pick up a cool $10,000,000 bonus. In eight tournaments since the Open his lowest position has been a T22 in the Wyndham Championship. With one win in the final series at the Barclays he has also produced a T5 and T13.
