Venue

Royal Golf Dar Es Salam, Rabat, Morocco • Purse: €1,500,000

Morocco will be buzzing with top golfers from across the globe as the stage is set for the Hassan II Golf trophy to be played at the Dar Es Salam Royal Golf Course from May 5th. The regal touch to the tournament is provided by His Royal Highness Prince Moulay Rachid who named this tournament after his father Hassan II, who was a huge golf enthusiast.

The tournament was created in 1971 to promote the sport throughout the country. Even though the tournament was partly a pro-am event with celebrities, the list of winners is quite impressive. Peter Townsend, Lee Trevino and Billy Casper made their way to the winner’s podium in the 1970s while in the recent past, names like Sam Torrance, Padraig Harrington and Ernie Els have won the tournament.

The Royal Golf Dar Es Salam was designed by the renowned Robert Trent Jones Senior covering over 500 hectares of natural habitat. With centuries old oak trees making their presence in the midst of trees, flowers and water, it is one of the most beautiful courses in the world.

But behind the beautiful trees lies a stern examination for the participants. Spread over a whopping 7,434 yards and boasting a par-score of 72, the course has been designed to test the skills of the participants at every corner.

The signature hole for the course, without a doubt, should be the one on ninth. The par-three hole is definitely one for the photograph enthusiasts – where the tee shot carries a lily pond complete with wading flamingos to a shallow island green that is surrounded by flowers and trees. Behind the beauty lies the challenge, of course.

Last year’s competition saw a dramatic final day in Morocco as Richie Ramsay came up trumps in the most unthinkable manner. The dramatic one shot victory for the Scot came after he dropped four shots in the space of two holes. In 2010, the Trophee Hassan II made its debut on the European Tour and Welsh rookie Rhys Davies lifted the trophy.

The tournament is important not just for Morocco but for the entire African continent too. Tunisia was the first African nation to have the honour of playing host to The European Tour (1982) with Morocco becoming the second. In another unique feat for the tournament, Trophee Hassan II and the Lalla Meryem Cup on the Ladies European Tour will be played in the same week.

Coming to the player roster, heading the list will be Dean Burmester of South Africa from the top 100 of the official World Rankings. Giving him company will be previous winners Michael Hoey and Rhys Davies. Joining the illustrated names and raising the local flag will be the talented amateurs Ayoub Id-Omar and Yassine Touhami.

This course is one of the more idyllic on the golfing circuit and the royal presence represents a touch of class. However, despite the beautiful of the course it still offers a major challenge to its participants and promises to be a highly interesting tournament.

Golf Tips For Trophee Hassan II

Andrew Johnston returns to European Tour action for his first tournament since his victory in the Spanish Open, where we tipped him up at a fantastic 100/1. He is no where near those odds this week more like 20/1. But with the quality of the field we can expect a great show again as long as he has recovered from celebrating with the members at the Mid. What a night that was!!!

Our next tip goes to Alexander Levy who has been a model of consistency this year and currently sits 31st in the Race To Dubai. he had a fine couple of weeks in China with a T4 and T28 at The Shenzhen International and Volvo China Open. He rates as favourite for this and is a worthy one at that.

Alexander Levy to win the Trophee Hassan II 14/1 – 2pts each way

Our last tip for the Trophee Hassan II as usual we look for a bit of value. Rafael Jacquelin fits the bill, with the field not the strongest and RJ a four time winner on the European Tour. At the likely odds of 100/1 he is one to keep on side.
