Turkey v Croatia Euro 2016 Preview

Turkey and Croatia go head-to-head on Sunday at the Parc de Princes in Group D of Euro 2016.

Turkey qualified for Euro 2016 as the best third place team and are odds of 14/5 with Coral to open their campaign with a win.

Fatih Terim’s side start their qualification campaign in poor fashion, but a strong finish allowed them to finish third in Group A behind Iceland and group winners Czech Republic, who they will also face in Group D of Euro 2016.

The improvement in form towards the end of the campaign saw the Turkish pick-up 17 points from a possible 21, as they claimed wins over the Netherlands, Iceland and Czech Republic.

Experienced boss Terim has attempted to inject youth into the side in recent months. The 63-year-old will be hoping that his relative youngsters can emulate the side that made it to the last four of the competition in 2008.

Croatia qualified for Euro 2016 by finishing second to Italy in Group H and are favourites to open their Euro 2016 campaign with a win at odds of 5/4 at Paddy Power.

Croatia were solid in qualifying, conceding just five goals and scoring a group high of 20 goals. Their boss is Ante Cacic is the newest appointment of any at Euro 2016, having overseen just five games, although he is unbeaten having won four and drew one of those games.

Niko Kovac’s replacement has been experimenting with his side in recent games, so he is obviously still looking at his available options. Cacic’s team are likely to look to La Liga stars Luka Modric and Ivan Rakitic to provide the creativity from midfield.

Past Meetings

These two teams have gone head-to-head on eight occasions, with Croatia winning four times and two games finishing in draws.

The two teams met in Euro 1996, where Croatia prevailed 1-0. The most famous meeting came in the Euro 2008 quarter-final though, when Turkey defeated Croatia on penalties after the game finished 1-1 following extra-time.

Croatia got revenge in the Euro 2012 play-off rounds though, as they beat Turkey 3-0 on aggregate to make it to the finals tournament.

Team and Selection News

Turkey are missing highly-rated winger Gokhan Tore, who has been omitted from the squad as he would have missed the first two group games through suspension. Cenk Tosun is expected to start up front at the expense of the experienced Burak Yilmaz.

Croatia has a nice mix of young and more experienced players heading to France. One player who will not be presence is Liverpool centre-back Dejan Lovren, who fell out with boss Cacic after the defender said he did not want to be a squad player.

Possible Turkey team line-up: Babacan, Gonul, Balta, Topal, Erkin, Tufan, Inan, Turan, Ozyakup, Calhanoglu, Tosun

Possible Croatia team line-up: Subasic, Srna, Corluka, Vida, Vrsaljko, Badelj, Modric, Rakitic, Kovacic, Perisic, Mandzukic

Betting Tip for Turkey v Croatia
Croatia are unbeaten under Ante Cacic and have never been beaten by Turkey in normal time. I expect that to continue and Croatia to open their campaign with a crucial victory over their familiar opponents.
